Mar. 24th, 2008 11:17 amSo, yeah, yesterday. Ought to write about it.
Messed around in CoH for a little bit after getting up, and got one of my various alts (Freedom Bow) up to 17! Woo! Archery is fun.
Watched a bit of basketball, and then went over to my parents for Easter dinner, Alex staying behind because his back was bothering him.
Or that was the original plan. I got a call as I was leaving, and was asked to hit the store on my way there. No problem!
1 trip to the store later, I pulled in, and my dad was studying at the table while my mom worked on dinner, and I found out that Alison wasn't feeling well, so she might not be eating.
Oh, OK then.
This is where things got a little wierd.
"Can you help me chop up some herbs?"
Oh, sure. Went over, started helping mom, I'm dicing away when I get this:
Mom: "Matthew...by the way...'Alleluia, the Lord is Risen.'"
So I responded back with "The Lord is Risen Indeed, Alleluia", and wondered what this had to do with the parsley I was working on.
"I didn't think you'd actually remember it."
Um, why wouldn't I?
"I mean, it's not like you go to church anymore."
True, but that doesn't mean that I've forgotten, I dunno, 20 years of my life. (Though, hey, if the option's there...hmmm.) She just sort of went back to working on stuff, and started tossing various bits of the Episcopal Rite II services back at me, so the next half hour was pretty much spent in Call and Response, to say nothing of my deepening confusion. After I finished with the litany and the rest of the food prep, I went to go sit on the couch since my mom had turned on the basketball.
"Oh, did I mention we're doing bread instead of mashed potatoes as a starch?"
"I didn't even know you were doing potatoes, so that's fine!"
"And I was gonna make beer bread, but we ran out of time, so it's just regular bread."
"That's OK, I don't mind."
"Oh, and the reason we had you get some stuff at the store was that the cake for dessert didn't come out right."
"Wow, you've really had a day, haven't you?"
"Yes, it *BANG CRASH* OW!"
While she'd been talking to me, mom had pulled out a pork loin and was cutting it on a thin, flimsy cutting board, half balanced on the edge of the sink, with a big heavy knife.
I turned around in time to watch the cut and uncut sections of the pork loin flying gracefully (for pork) over my mom's head and then landing on the floor. She managed to A) Cut her thumb, B) Launch 90% of the pork, and C) flip the cutting board so it's now resting against the back of the sink.
Except for the food being ruined and the large cut, it was an amazing circus feat.
Unfortunately, this also set my Dad off about "Why were you doing it like that?!" and they had a bit of a snit, which I just tuned out as best I could and focused on basketball. (I know it's probably not the best way to handle it, but it was the best I could see short of walking out and causing more problems.)
Fortunately (kinda), they were also working on a lamb roast, too, so there was some protein at the table, but -unfortunately-, what we didn't know was my mom had been braising some asparagus during this, and left it in the oven, unattended...and turned quite effectively into asparagus shaped mush by the time she got it out.
A dinner with two strained parents and an obviously not feeling that great sibling gets even more strained with two of the three things on the plate are not great (Lamb - very dry and with this wierd onion and rosemary relish that just didn't taste right), inedible (asparagus), and bread. (Bread.)
Before dessert, we called my grandparents and talked to them for a bit, which was nice and did raise the mood some, and then fortunately I was spared by
demeterschild beeping me about coming through town and wanting to stop by. I made a couple excuses, for one saying that it had been Alex who texted me, and asking me to come home.
They insisted on sending leftovers home. I'll let Alex try the lamb, as all pain should be shared. The asparagus went straight to the garbage. (I'm evil, but I'm not that evil.)
Man, what a difference getting home makes. Noelle managed to beat me to the house thanks to judicious use of her accelerator, and greeted me happily as I stepped in the door, which was pretty awesome. We spent about an hour chatting about how her family Easter had gone (well!), how her family was doing (yaay), and how mine had gone (umm...) and I knocked off a bit of the dessert my parents sent me home with. (That, at least, was pretty good.)
We caught up on what she'd been doing the past bit, how her trip to Vegas went, swapped various stories, tortured Onyx a bit (she spent -lots- of time snugging him when he walked past), traded some computer bits and jokes, and I ended up showing her the pictures from Kim and Mike's wedding, Cara and IIs wedding, and Phil and Jenn's wedding, with all the attendant "awwws" and nostalgia for people, and her wondering why she keeps not getting invited to weddings. ("Well, you did move around a lot." "So, they should just find you, and then you can find me!")
After awhile, it was time for Noelle to head back, I ran out and got some edible food for me, and some dinner for Alex, watched some teevee, and off to bed for today, another great day.
Man, writing this was harder than I thought it would be, and I have no idea why. A lot of yesterday just -didn't feel good-, and it was hard to go back through, I guess.
