I now have 3 55 gallon steel drums in my possession.

They formerly held: Vegetable Oil, Vegetable Oil, and "Donut Jam (Raspberry)".

Behold my sweet flavor.

Next steps: 720 pounds of concrete, angle iron, grates, stove kit + flues, discussion on if we want this to be anchored or mobile, handles, thermometer, some blades for flaggerx's sawzall, and a decision on if I want to coat the barrels with high temp. paint or not. I'm getting mixed opinions.

I also talked with a guy up in Independence who just built one of these about 6 months ago, and he -strenuously- recommended a book I couldn't find at Borders, but picked up at Amazon, so I may hold off on too much construction until it gets here...

Amusing moment: As I was unloading the drums from my car (and Alex's, since I was only able to get two into mine and he was good enough to come help with the third), the neighbors immediately asked "Oh, are you gonna build a BBQ smoker?!?!"

Yeah, I think we're gonna get -real- popular after I start firing this guy up.

My first thought is that "720 pounds of concrete" and "mobile" don't go well together.

Well, y'see, the concrete is for the new patio I'm pouring as part of this. (Wood deck + 500 degree heat in the firebox = BAD)

However, I think Alex is threatening to make some kimchi stirfry around 7 tonight. :>

Well, then, that makes sense. In that case, I'll just say that a coat of paint wouldn't be a bad idea, and that you should ask someone artistic to make up some stencils for you. Perhaps a pig on a spit, or a turkey skewered, etc.?
