Just saw a flyer for a re-enactment group dedicated to preserving "the proud and honorable traditions of the East German border guards. "

WTF

o.O What do they use? Easy to assemble fake wall segments? Temporary towers with cardboard concertina wire? Shoot Nerf balls at people attempting to escape totalitarianism?

I'm just curious who volunteers to be the family they catch trying to sneak out of the country, and gets shot.

Let's not forget the ill-fitting polyester uniforms!

Oh! Oh! And broken down jeeps and trucks, just like the real ones!

I...

...can't even fathom a situation arising in any context where "Some people pay good money for that" would be an appropriately snarky response here.

"Ilsa, She-Wolf of the Grenztruppen der DDR" just doesn't have the same ring to it, y'know?

The apocalypse cometh . . . .

whoa

[identity profile] bzarcher.livejournal.com 2009-03-21 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I...yeah. Just no words.

Oh the GDR!

If you haven't seen the movie "Goodbye Lenin!" I think you'd like it. Even if you're not all versed in recent German history, it's a good watch. It's all about this guy trying to shield his mother from the changes as East and West join up again.

It does sound interesting. But...

East German Border Guard Re-enactment group?

...The other pile of skulls is always nicer?

Great. Now I'm wondering if there's a Khmer Rouge re-enactor group. Thanks so much, Dave.
