Side note, as I seem to have a few more minutes to myself...

I'm starting to really consider getting a credit card. I think my upcoming expenses may be at the point where this would be a more reasonable solution, so long as I demonstrated self control.

Thoughts?

"Ooo - aaa" in surprise and alarm!

You have no credit card? I guess there must be reasons. I have two; Platinum MasterCard and Platinum Discover Card. I only buy things I know I can afford, but I have the cards around just in case I have an emergency. Plus I improve my credit rating (and have been since college, when I got a student mastercard) and earn 1% back on my Discover Card! Since I can use my Discover Card for nearly anything (except mom and pop stores, but most of them accept MasterCard) I get money back for money I earn! Do I sound like an infomercial yet?

Credit Cards by themselves are not evil ... it's people's lack of control that makes them so. Just don't buy the "credit protection" plan. They fuck you in the ass over that.

Do it.

No credit is almost as bad as bad credit.

So long as you're not buying it for an extra margin of cash like some people, then you should be fine. The only reason I'm getting one is for online purchases, really.

I think the main reason I have -not- wanted one is that my parents -did- have bad credit for quite awhile, thanks to some irresponsible choices they made early on in their marraige, and I heard nothing about money except that it was bad and horrid to get credit cards. But...yeah. Your arguments are exactly why I am thinking about this.

Yeah...and I know I can make a reasonable monthly payment on one. And it will let me do things like pay for hotels without being afraid that I might not have -quite- enough in my debit account.

And that's exactly it. My parents spent a damn long time tellng me about how irresponsible they were, and implying I'd do the same. And I kept being unsure about it. And now I'm kinda realizing that I -can- be responsible, and it'd be damn useful, and it'd be far more useful than just using a debit card.

Yes, yes, keep up on monthly payments. Don't do the minimum payment every time the bill comes in. Cut that balance down to zero! Rar!

Plus it'll free up more of the overall credit you're given if it isn't used up to near maximum. ;)
