Smallish rant on the arrogance of certain organized religious persons.

So as I mentioned, I drove up to Medina to take my car in. While doing so, I saw two churches that both claimed to be 'The chosen of God.'

Excuse me. To be proper, they claimed to be THE CHOSEN OF GOD!!

This /pisses/ me off.

They weren't even the same denomination. Both appeared to be little evangelical places, with one actually set back into the woods, and only signs on the road and a shaky looking dirt and gravel drive leading into the shadows and hints of a steeple indicating where it might actually be.

These people. These arrogant. Stupid. Fucking. People.

If you want to claim to be the chosen of God, as far as I can see, there's some pre-requisites that need to be carried out.

1: Every member of your congregation must be kicked out of homes and forced to travel to sufficiently far away that they have no clue what the fuck is around them or how to live as they had been.

2: After a period where said congregation reaches the point approaching a normal life again, they are to be made the subject of severe persecution by their new nation.

3: If at all possible, they should be forced into project housing and denied food before being put into hard labor.

4: 1 out of every 3 congregation members must be shot after 1-2 years of condition 3.

5: Constant attacks by neighbors. Particularly while congregation members are at home or in worship. Extra points if spectacular methods are used.

6: Get your arrogant asses in front of every Jew you can find, particularly if you want to do some kind of 'holy land' pilgrimage. Let them vigorously beat the shit out of you because you have the gall to claim that their history is a lie, and their persecutions were meaningless. (This particularly applies to those groups who not only claim to be 'Truely Christian', but attack Jews at any opportunity.)

7: Stop evangelizing and wait for God and/or his messengers to contact you. Artificially induced visions, glossolalia, or seizures do not count.

Okay, that might be a little over the top, but still. Seeing that kind of stuff never fails to get my goat.

I'm a bit confused. Are those seven things you list a venomous satire of Christianity, or an exaggerated mirror image of what they do? As a man of Christ, I'm curious to learn more about your paganistic ways as well as your, well, antagonism towards various churches.

First off, any church that puts "The Chosen of God!" on their signage has to be aware of the fact that they are NOT the first people to make that claim.... and the Jews have a better claim, in my opinion.

Secondly--- one doesn't have to be a practicing pagan to be offended by the conduct of some of the more... aggressive Christian organizations/groups out there at the moment.

Actually, this comes from having Holocaust survivors in my family, and feeling that the only people currently having a longstanding title to 'The Chosen of God' are the Jews, as established through the Old Testament and suffering that they have endured since, and that the countclaims should have equal weight behind them.

I'll certainly give Christianity in all its' forms a lot of credit for many good things, and I still have a lot of respect for a lot of Christians and even many denominations that do not cry out that they have total supremacy over all other religions.

I just get annoyed at mass declarations of stupidity, arrogance, and disrespect for major sections of their own belief structures.

One side of my family has Holocaust survivors.

The other side has German Army veterans.

This made get-togethers problematic, to say the least.

I fail to see how if one group of people has proclaimed themselves the chosen of God, that that somehow bars anyone else from making a similar claim. I've never weighed longevity very heavily, and in this case it seems rather absurd to even consider it. Even if they aren't the first to make such a claim, just because they came to such a conclusion later should not invalidate it by date alone.

I never implied that one had to be pagan to be offended, I simply know Matt to be a self-acknowledged pagan and therefore was curious if his own religion had any influence on his post here. Apparently his Holocaust heritage is the lightning rod for his ire, but that was why I asked in the first place, to find out.

*grins* My own religion probably applies somewhat to my distaste at massive evangelicalism. I really prefer a more intimate religious experience, or at least one which stresses that the church accepts and waits for all, rather than that people should be made to come to the church.

The holy eucharist is a religious experience which I totally appreciate for that reason. Christ died for everyone, and he and his priests are just waiting for you to come and share.
