I felt more sympathy and remorse about Wil Wheaton's cat being put to sleep a few days ago than I ever will for Terri Schiavo.

Probably because Terri Schiavo actually died when I was, what, 6 years old?

Goodbye, Felix.

I felt bad for Schiavo because of the fucking circus that her parents created. not that she knew, but i would haunt anyone who did that with my death.

Yeah, I suppose I can see that.

I have pity for them, but not on them.

I cried for Wil's cat - both his first post detailing the whole story, and again yesterday when I looked at the picture to find Felix was the spitting image of the cat we had when I was a teenager.

I'm just happy that Terri is at rest now, no longer the subject of arguments, national debate, and all else that gave her even less dignity than her condition already did ...

Now we can just wait for the whole fucking thing to die down so we can get onto bigger things... Like the Jackson trial.

[Note: I am so kidding about the jackson trial.]

My sympathy for Terri Schiavo was centered around "if my parents did that, I would die and come back as a brain-eating zombie just in revenge."

And considering one of the few things that gives me screaming horrible nightmares is things related to zombies, that is saying something.

I had a grand-aunt starve herself to death because she didn't want to go on. She was mostly blind, mostly deaf, couldn't walk well, and had aphasia. Otherwise, she was healthy as a horse. Could have lived another 20 years. One day, she asked her physician nephew for "a pill to take me away from this" and he, the good law-abiding doctor, refused.

That day, she quit eating.

She lasted almost two months. It's surprising how little energy the body uses when you're old and bed-ridden.

Ever since the Schiavo coverage started, I've wondered, where was all the outrage when my aunt was starving herself? Clearly, it was her will -- and make no mistake, it took a lot of will to keep up that hunger strike when everyone in the family was trying to get her to eat, but unwilling to take her someplace to be force-fed -- but would her will have changed if she suddenly had people holding candlelight vigils outside her bedroom? Would her will have changed if her congressman was calling her up to ask her to have a little soup?

There are children suffering from poverty and malnutrition in every city in America. And their lives will almost certainly be cut short because of it. Where the hell are the right-to-life protestors for *them*? Oh, yeah, I forgot: once you're old enough to start acting like a brat and acting out because you're underfed and abused, you're not "innocent" anymore, and not worthy of tears and vigils.

Don't forget that they're also considered likely to grow up voting Democrat...

It's very disgusting to watch all this.

It was a really sad story. Brought a tear to my eye when he was describing the poor 6-pound cat's final hours.

I'm hoping that she finds something, or that she already found it a long time ago. But I'm afraid the debate and argument is likely to get worse before it gets better. (Though the fact that her parents apparently sold off the names and personal info of everyone who's been writing/donating/supporting them, etx. to a political spam company makes me hope they get some very nasty attention before this ends.)

Still, though - Felix just hurt to read, as things went on...

I was disgusted over the fact that it went on for so long. She was legally married, her husband has power of attorney, she had been in a vegetative state for 15 years and the doctors all said she wasn't coming back. She wasn't alive, she was already gone. Let her die in peace and with dignity, there was nothing dignified about what her parents were doing to their child.

I can see that being a downer, but I'd only seen the guy on Comedy central once or twice. He had an OK act, tho.

I think they were very, very, very scared. I also would put money that the way they treated her was a big part of why she hadn't gone to church for a long time after she'd been married, why she had eating disorders, and why she was in and out of counseling a lot.

But obviously, they loved their daughter too much to let her go, and being obsessive parents is currently en vogue, I suppose.

Next up, parents who loeve their kids enough to beat them, right?

That's the feeling I got too. :( The eating disorder suggests controlling family, and their behavior since she got sick SCREAMS it. If they did want to control every aspect of her life, they hit the jackpot having her bedridden and incapable of conscious thought.

Its why when I finish school and can find a lawyer I like, I WILL set my own living will with a DNR, so that every person I know is aware of what I want.
