Hmm....

Having never really learned how to play much hockey beyond the basics in gym classes over the years, is it bad that I'm considering dropping $40-50 on a decent wood stick, tape, and some practice pucks/balls to mess around with?

This could get coupled to the idea of the gym membership and eventually starting to go down to the ice haus for pickup games, but I think -that- point of the plan is a year or two down the road. I haven't been on any kind of skates for at least 5 years, and even if I am pretty comfortable on in-lines or conventional roller skates, that's -not- ice....

If you can rollerblade, you can ice skate. Stopping however...

But I dunno if I'd drop that much money to mess around with. I spent... 15 bucks on my stick that I use when we go whacking balls at the garage on rollerblades. When I get to ready to play ice hockey, maybe this winter, I'll go get a decent stick.

Well, I'm thinking at least 1 $20 stick (maybe 2 depending on crackability), couple rolls of tape, practice ball and pucks, and maybe a net. Not $50 on one stick but $50 total for the setup. :D

Ah. Well, you should be ok with one stick. I've been pretty brutal with mine, and it's still surviving. :)

Even better.

I'm also thinking about hitting the play-it-again sports near here - if they've got some used sticks (likely!) for $5-10, that's beer money.

If I were on the ice with you, I'd fear your body block...

Yeah, I figure that skills from playing linebacker will translate decently for checking and playing the body, and I certainly have enough surface area to block shots -with-, but I do want to learn how to have at least a little offensive upside. :D
