Today in a nutshell: AWESOME.
Aug. 5th, 2007 10:08 pmIn a little more detail:
After waking up far too early on a Sunday, Alex and I watched the FA Community Shield game live from New Wembley.
While I'm (nominally) a Reds fan, I'm rather deeply opposed to Man. U in all respects, so I put on my Chelski hat and rooted for them, until Cech completely shat the bed during penalty kicks. Ah, well.
This was followed by a decision to clean the hell out of the place, so that's exactly what we did. I think I sneezed up most of my entire headmeats from all the dust we kicked up, but a few hours later we'd cleaned all the dishes, wiped down the kitchen, thrown out 2 bagfuls of old mail and assorted shit we'd let pile up, folded the extra leaves back into the table, and the piece de resistance: Finally hung the coffee mug rack onto the wall. (This is a pretty major achievement when you consider it's been waiting paitently since...March? No. Wait. Crap. Christmas. Damn.)
To celebrate, Alex baked a tasty yellow cake! (Uranium optional recipie) Which we then let cool and frosted with chocolate icing and lots of sprinkles.
Not too long after that, Gary and Lucy dropped by (AKA
las and
haceldama). Lucy was kind enough to give me a copy of her new book, of which I am 4 awesome stories into at this point, and ya'll should buy it if you're looking for new reading material.
After a period of showing them around the house, chatting, showing off the TV that Gary hadn't seen before, and cat-taunting, we tromped over to the Movie Tavern and caught The Bourne Ultimatum.
The Movie Tavern is interesting. Matinee prices were quite good ($5 incl. tax), but the special thing is that when you walk into your theatre, you're handed a menu. You seat yourself in delightfully comfy leather chairs (with wheels on them!) and a server comes by to get your drink orders, explains how to use the call button to get refills or whatnot, and gives you a few minutes with the menu before swinging back over to take orders. (We each got something different, and the general reaction was that all of our food was quite good, though Alex thought his pizza was a little over-cheesy).
Myself, I enjoyed some really good fried pickle chips, a bottomless coke (which does cushion the blow of it being $3.50 for a goddamn beverage!) and some pretty nice chicken fingers. I almost went for the bottomless popcorn instead of the chips, but the lure of fried pickles is simply irresistable.
Food was very discretely served during the film without interfering with watching the movie, and I appreciated the fact that they had a small shrouded light on each person's "table" (more like a counter, but...) to help you eat without making a mess. Refills were handled pretty well, too - the only time they had a minor snafu was trying to figure out who got cokes, and who got iced tea, and even then they kept their voices down and did a good job of not inconveniencing the other moviegoers.
As for the film itself? Difficult to describe without spoiling things, but I really enjoyed it, and thought it was a well put together spy movie. You don't necessarily have to have seen the previous ones to get into this, but it doesn't hurt either. I'd recommend it.
Also, Julia Stiles = Smoking Hot.
After the movie, we returned home for more cat taunting, talking over the film a bit, talking over how surprisingly good the food was a bit, and construction porn (AKA How It's Made) I got to learn how hockey gloves are made! It was very exciting. I thought it was really interesting that machine-sewn gloves can't flex properly, so they're one of those things that will always be made by hand.
Also, dammit, I want hockey gloves now. I know the leauge I'm gonna play in doesn't require them, but still.
Dave and Lyssa called about this point asking about coming over, so we put plans for coffee and cake on temporary hold and waited until the lure of cake was too strong to resist.
Fortunately, they arrived about 5 minutes after that, so all was well, and cake was delicious!
We BSed decently long into the night, showed off Lucy's new book a bit more, gave the cats far too much attention, and then people needed to head home and get rest, and Alex and I cleaned up the kitchen again. :D
It was really, really wonderful being social, having people over, and making a day of things without having to plan a bunch of stuff or do a lot of travel. I especially liked just getting to sit in my living room and talk to people for a couple hours, and I'm really hoping we get to do it more often.
