In a little more detail:

After waking up far too early on a Sunday, Alex and I watched the FA Community Shield game live from New Wembley.

While I'm (nominally) a Reds fan, I'm rather deeply opposed to Man. U in all respects, so I put on my Chelski hat and rooted for them, until Cech completely shat the bed during penalty kicks. Ah, well.

This was followed by a decision to clean the hell out of the place, so that's exactly what we did. I think I sneezed up most of my entire headmeats from all the dust we kicked up, but a few hours later we'd cleaned all the dishes, wiped down the kitchen, thrown out 2 bagfuls of old mail and assorted shit we'd let pile up, folded the extra leaves back into the table, and the piece de resistance: Finally hung the coffee mug rack onto the wall. (This is a pretty major achievement when you consider it's been waiting paitently since...March? No. Wait. Crap. Christmas. Damn.)

To celebrate, Alex baked a tasty yellow cake! (Uranium optional recipie) Which we then let cool and frosted with chocolate icing and lots of sprinkles.

Not too long after that, Gary and Lucy dropped by (AKA [livejournal.com profile] las and [livejournal.com profile] haceldama). Lucy was kind enough to give me a copy of her new book, of which I am 4 awesome stories into at this point, and ya'll should buy it if you're looking for new reading material.

After a period of showing them around the house, chatting, showing off the TV that Gary hadn't seen before, and cat-taunting, we tromped over to the Movie Tavern and caught The Bourne Ultimatum.

The Movie Tavern is interesting. Matinee prices were quite good ($5 incl. tax), but the special thing is that when you walk into your theatre, you're handed a menu. You seat yourself in delightfully comfy leather chairs (with wheels on them!) and a server comes by to get your drink orders, explains how to use the call button to get refills or whatnot, and gives you a few minutes with the menu before swinging back over to take orders. (We each got something different, and the general reaction was that all of our food was quite good, though Alex thought his pizza was a little over-cheesy).

Myself, I enjoyed some really good fried pickle chips, a bottomless coke (which does cushion the blow of it being $3.50 for a goddamn beverage!) and some pretty nice chicken fingers. I almost went for the bottomless popcorn instead of the chips, but the lure of fried pickles is simply irresistable.

Food was very discretely served during the film without interfering with watching the movie, and I appreciated the fact that they had a small shrouded light on each person's "table" (more like a counter, but...) to help you eat without making a mess. Refills were handled pretty well, too - the only time they had a minor snafu was trying to figure out who got cokes, and who got iced tea, and even then they kept their voices down and did a good job of not inconveniencing the other moviegoers.

As for the film itself? Difficult to describe without spoiling things, but I really enjoyed it, and thought it was a well put together spy movie. You don't necessarily have to have seen the previous ones to get into this, but it doesn't hurt either. I'd recommend it.

Also, Julia Stiles = Smoking Hot.

After the movie, we returned home for more cat taunting, talking over the film a bit, talking over how surprisingly good the food was a bit, and construction porn (AKA How It's Made) I got to learn how hockey gloves are made! It was very exciting. I thought it was really interesting that machine-sewn gloves can't flex properly, so they're one of those things that will always be made by hand.

Also, dammit, I want hockey gloves now. I know the leauge I'm gonna play in doesn't require them, but still.

Dave and Lyssa called about this point asking about coming over, so we put plans for coffee and cake on temporary hold and waited until the lure of cake was too strong to resist.

Fortunately, they arrived about 5 minutes after that, so all was well, and cake was delicious!

We BSed decently long into the night, showed off Lucy's new book a bit more, gave the cats far too much attention, and then people needed to head home and get rest, and Alex and I cleaned up the kitchen again. :D

It was really, really wonderful being social, having people over, and making a day of things without having to plan a bunch of stuff or do a lot of travel. I especially liked just getting to sit in my living room and talk to people for a couple hours, and I'm really hoping we get to do it more often.

Thanks for inviting us over! We had a great time.

Also, if you have the opportunity to wear cool gloves, you should just on general principle. So I vote for the hockey gloves even if the league says you don't need them ;-)

It was my pleasure! As you can tell, we hated it. ;D

Yeah, hockey gloves are very awesome. I just may need to save up - if I want really nice ones, that's between $75-$150....

Also, thanks for the wine! I'm looking forward to cracking that open :)

*Grins*

Tell me how it is - would you believe we haven't tasted any since the very small amount we had at bottling?

Doesn't it feel nice to finally move on?

This is what you really needed. :)

It does! I didn't even realize that's what I was doing, but it does!

It was definently a very, very good weekend. I (only semi-jokingly) said that after Lisa moved out everything just kept going uphill.

Hooray for the good weekend and the good start to this new chapter! We need to get together in the next coupla weeks, I've just been so wiped from scheduled stuff, work, and travel that I haven't been really proactive about being social, stuff's just kind of happened.

Oh, dude, don't worry - I haven't been the most social creature myself, all things considered. :D

Think you might be able to link up with Dave and I for the baseball game on Wednesday?

If not, we'll figure something out. :D

Sadly Wednesday's going to be a late night at work, I'm afraid.

However, if you guys are free Thursday night, I've got two free (admit two each) passes for an advance screening of Superbad at the Gateway at 7:30 if you're interested.

If not, as you say, we'll make something happen perhaps after payday.

I've got a work thing Thursday night, I'm afraid.

We'll sort it out.

over cheesy?

I cannot imagine a pizza with too much cheese. Just doesn't seem possible. A pizza with too little sauce or to thin a crust, yes, but never overly cheesy.

Thik I might like this place. And you deserved a good day.

Alex clarified this as "I knew the toppings were there, but until I tried them seperately all I could taste was the cheese."

I leave you two to fight this out with knives. :D

We really enjoyed going there, personally. I don't know how frequently I can do it before the price started to pile up (It was a total of about $25 for ticket, food, and drinks for me), but now and again I think it'd be a really nice treat for myself.

Especially that dessert menu...ooo.

Gary and I would be up for going there to see Stardust next weekend, if you are :)

Sounds like fun to me. I already promised to attend Craig and Karen's Persied Party/Cookout on Saturday, but if we went early (and I don't get a service call) or did this on Sunday that would be good, Might even be able to take Diane :).

Actually, I like my pizza with a little less sauce, and with all the Cincinnati style pizza in Columbus, thin crust is pretty common. Chicago style thick crust is very rare.

I think, though, there was so much cheese on the pizza, that it softened the crust, the middle was a little soggy. Also, as BZ said, the cheese covered all the other toppings. It said that there was pepperoni, peppers, onions, sausage and one other topping... I honestly didn't taste any of them. I could've ordered a cheese pizza and saves a couple bucks.

Also... I'm lactose intolerant, but not seriously intolerant. I can take some cheese and survive, but I think this was pushing it.
