bzarcher: A Sylveon from Pokemon floating in the air, wearing a pair of wingtip glasses (liverpool)

Spent some time with my parents - I think they've fallen into the "More worried about me than I actually am" camp. But, OTOH, we got free food and tons of leftovers out of it, and my mom made chocolate cupcakes, so it can't be all bad?

They're talking about how "it'd be nice if we got together every week!" - ...yeah, I don't see that happening. I think that I've found a remarkably healthy and non-confrontational relationship with my family by keeping the visits infrequent and pleasant, and given how we tend to get onto each others nerves over time, I can't see a regularly scheduled visit as a good idea.

Still, it was nice to spend a bit of time with them, talk about things, and even if I did have to go over what exactly happened again, it wasn't as painful this time.

Other than that, I've been noticing a disturbing trend as the EPL season begins: I'm getting interested in English sport.

Not "Oh, I'll watch if not much else is on."

Not "Oh, sure, I guess, and I'll root for not-ManU and not-Arsenal"

Not "Ok, let's catch the tape delayed match."

Getting up at 8am to catch the match interested. Briefly flirting with the idea of a Liverpool scarf interested. Caring about the Community Shield match interested.

And there's more.

Following [livejournal.com profile] suncrush's reports on the World Cup of Rugby.
Watching -darts-.

I haven't been seized with the urge to watch, or worse, to understand Cricket yet, but if I should, I expect one of you to do the right thing, and kill me.

Oh - for those interested in flirting with non-Sport UK entertainment, I think I've already talked up Jekyll to a few of you, but I do seriously recommend it. It's a fantastic series.

Other than that, I'm tired. Anyone else want to catch me up?

This is exactly what I would say if I found myself in your position. ([livejournal.com profile] ravenshrinkery, the Slugs fan I occasionally mention, has tried to get me to care about cricket. It ain't happening.)

He's a Carrier.

You know what you have to do - A gentle death is the best option. Softly, like his mother would.

If you do get into cricket, will you please explain the game to me? thanks.

No-one can explain Cricket. Sudden grasp and understanding of the game is one sign of the disease moving into terminal stages.

And yet, American football remains as opaquely impenetrable to me as ever. Tell you what, go get yourself a tape of Aussie Rules football. The rules are not that hard to understand. Really!

...and yet even the professional refs don't always know what all of the rules are. :D

Much as Plankton and Bald Eagles evolved from the same glop, Cricket rose from the Sports Primordial to despair before elegant, glorious Baseball.
