I finished Crooked Little Vein last night.

It wasn't bad - shorter than I really expected, but not bad.

However, I really don't have the kneequaking reactions of surprise and joy that some of the other reviewers and people who have talked to me about the book have, and I'm trying to decide if that's because I read (without realizing it) quite a few chunks of the book when posted to Ellis' various "Toss shit at the wall to see what sticks" blogs, or because most of the stuff that was supposed to horrify and shock me in this book really didn't.

I will say, though, without trying to spoil anyone, that there's a coversation that occurs between the protagonist and an elderly man on an airplane, and I think it's the best, most well written, insightful passage in the book. I really doubt that was the intention, but it really stood out to me and made me stop and seriously take my time with that entire chapter as a result.

Aside from that, it's been a really, really boring day aside from some faxery with a couple vendors and a DDOS attack, and it's just left me feeling really blargh.

Hope everyone had a better day, and a good weekend.

I agree with your observations. In addition: I am very pleased that he's writing novels (er, at least, I hope he'll write more) and could very easily read hundreds in that format. Nice, easy start.

Airplane bit? Gave me SUCH GLEE.

Well, apparently he's sold at least 2 more, so we'll hopefully see them in the next year or three. I agree it was a nice reading format, but for the list price (and I freely admit that I got it for 40% off at amazon, but STILL), I expected a larger book. $25 can buy me the complete season 1 doctor who scriptbook, with big pretty colour pictures. If he keeps putting them out at about the same length, I'd be happier if the list price dropped to $15 or so.

...I giggled like a schoolgirl for 3/4 of the book. Because the descriptions were delightful.

*grins* Not surprised.

I think that's one thing I noticed - he wrote this almost like an artist might come along and decide to do some work based on the book. It does make me wonder if this started as a comic project.

Also: Ninja doormen. :>
