I actually met him about ten years ago at a signing in Powell's. The coolest part of that was I managed to flabbergast him!

What happend was, he signed my CD of Paladin of the Lost Hour, and my copies of the first vol. of Edgeworks and Dream Corridor, and then I shook his hand, telling him, "This has been a rare honor and an unpresidented privalege."

HE quips, "Well, thank you for sharing your emotions in public like that."

I respond, "Well, thank you for thaking me for sharing my emotions in public like that!"

His jaw drops, and I bolt the hell out of there, knowing that I managed to get the last word in on Harlan Ellison!



Oh don't worry, he'd managed to berate me for stupidity earlier in the conversation, so we came out even...

From various stories, it's not so hard to get the last word - he just wants you do to it in a reasonably intelligent way, lest there be hard and terrible revenge.

Harlan Ellison has actually been perfectly polite to Gary the times the two of them have interacted. Gary's been on his best behavior, mind, but still.
