I was a bit confused and pissed about some of the moves, but that ain't nothing on this guy in a discussion of who (if anyone) gets the 'C' for the remainder of the season.

Giving Vyborny the 'C' isn't about "what have you done for me lately" it's more like "Thanks for staying here as long as you did and not talking **** about our club on some Colorado golf course and then refusing our contract offer over a measly 500K at the trade-deadline and then waiving your NTC so you could go back to the team you wish you never left and then signing there immediately and then acting like you had no idea it was coming."
Meanwhile...yeah, still kinda engh.
I am seriously confused about what our roster will look like for tomorrow's game. I suppose it's the bellweather. Maybe the (almost certain) callups we're about to get into the roster will snap up, Nash fires up the room, and we manage to squeak in somehow, but it seems like Howson decided we're pretty much as good as it's gonna get this year, and we'll see what the off-season brings.
(If we look at UFA centers coming out...ugn. Langkow, maybe? Not much else out there unless we seriously go in and pull a trade in the offseason, perhaps.)
Interesting response from another guy, tho.
Home from Montreal, I've been glued to the tube watching Trade Centre. Here's my take:
First of all I'd just like to voice my disappointment in most of the posters who frequent the CBJ board here at HF. I read through most of the threads and discussions that have taken place here today, and the sheer amount of complaints, attacks against Howson, and general "negativeness" is disgusting.
First of all we are only 5 points out. We are playing extremely well, with huge wins over Detroit, Ottawa and Montreal recently. It's not like Howson and the rest of management felt like they didn't need to make any moves. They were in the mix for Richards right until the end, but honestly did anybody think we were going to get him after Dallas dangled Smith?
Along with Richards, Howson made the deal to improve our PP by getting Tarnstrom. He showed a commitment to getting better.
Obviously, we didn't get Richards. It was known before today that if we weren't able to improve the squad with a top-flight player, we'd be a seller. The best possible scenario happened for us, we traded two impending UFAs for future assets.
The Foote situation sucks, but only because I think the team will miss his leadership. Personally I am glad that Foote is gone, he is very replaceable skill-wise, and I don't think his heart is in Columbus anyway. Getting the first rounder for him is amazing. It will likely be a mid teen pick. I am really hoping for the Avs to make the playoffs this year because I love some of the guys available in the first round this June.
As for the Feds trade, again, I love it. Teddy Ruth was one of the defenders I wanted last season, but we took Weber. I think that he fills an important hole in the franchise, with our weak defensive prospect depth.
Who will be the next captain? I doubt we will name one the rest of the season. Depending on how we do in free agency, I think one will be named during camp next season. Whether it's a guy like Nash stepping up or maybe even a new guy.
Some folks are talking about who we'll go after to fill the centre void, and I really hope it's not Marleau. I just don't see him fitting in at all.
In terms of the playoffs, I think we still have a good chance. Fedorov has been essentially a non-factor of late, and we've been winning. Foote's skill set can be replaced by commitee. We take a leadership hit, but I think we still have a solid leadership core in place to lead us down the stretch. WE ARE NOT OUT OF THE PLAYOFF RACE.
Overall, I think this is a great day for us. We didn't get Richards, but I think after that happened the best possible situation took place. Getting the assets we did for guys who weren't going to be back after the season is perfect.
We'll see what happens. I want to be hopeful, but I think for the franchise's sake, we better make some huge moves this summer, or we may start hearing about "Relocation" in the same breath as Nashville.

Date: 2008-02-27 03:17 am (UTC)I think they got good value in a first rounder for Foote, but I can't see that Hitchcock is pleased. Granted Methot gets more playing time and that's good for next year, but leadership is leadership.
I just have to hope that defenceman at Notre Dame is all they hope he is. A second rounder is pretty lame for Federov, even with all the cap money saved.
I never thought we'd get Richards, so I'm not super dissappointed.
But I think this marks us as sellers this year. On the other hand, the core of the team is still there, and the youth. Maybe it will all work out. But I'm still thinking about it.

Date: 2008-02-27 03:59 am (UTC)We'll see what happens. According to an interview on 1460 with Jim Day, "Richards as a player preferred Columbus. Tampa as a team preferred the offer from Dallas, and Richards decided it was acceptable." That's at least hope that players in principle are not averse to coming here.
My major concern is that while we're going to have money to spend on free agents....to be blunt, the current free agent crop for what we need (puck moving D, top line centre) sucks. Unless Howson plans on doing what Kevin Lowe did this past summer and chucking a few offer sheets around, which could make things rather interesting.

Date: 2008-02-27 10:07 pm (UTC)It's great to be under the salary cap, but only if there are people you want to spend for. (Besides LeClaire who deserves a hefty raise as he might be the league MVP, whether he gets the trophy or not)
I'm glad I'm not GM.

Date: 2008-02-27 10:17 pm (UTC)Maybe Howson could have done a multi-team deal (perhaps getting Kolzig or Johnson from Washington after they got Huet) and traded that goalie to Tampa, but I don't know. If they really got Dallas' final offer at midnight and stopped returning Howson's calls until they said "Richards is going to Dallas", I suspect that Feaster had his mind made up about who he was trading with regardless of what Howson might have offered.
