bzarcher: A Sylveon from Pokemon floating in the air, wearing a pair of wingtip glasses (bluejackets)

I was coming upstairs to post about the Jackets thrashing of Calgary, but the first thing I did was hit my RSS feeder, and things just stopped for a minute, because Arthur C. Clarke is dead.

I cannot -tell- you how many of his books I have read. Most of them, anyhow. Even some that I kinda wish I hadn't. (Garden of Rama? I'm looking at you.) If I had to guess about which three authors had the most influence on me as a kid, it'd probably be Asimov, Clarke, Gary Trudeau, and HST.

No more books. No more talks. No more guesses about what is coming down the road. (I have to wonder if anyone sent him a terabyte USB drive. Not quite the "Petabyte the size of a small book" he saw coming, but a big step, and a lot faster than 3001.)

Goodbye, sir, and good luck. I hope that you dream.

Talk about a gut punch....

I still remember being at Purdue during college career version 1.0, when the news of Asimov's death spread thru the engineering and science departments. A graduate student walked into our chem lecture, whispered something to the prof, and he cancelled class "due to the death of his idol."

Yep. That's pretty much exactly it.

Didn't you just list 4 authors?

...

Hunter S. Thompson isn't so much of an author as a verbal shaman.

(Yes, I did. :D)
