On a personal level, it's probably a problem sign when I am perfectly fine with doing Rock Band vocals, but when my mom leaves me a voice message asking if I'd be a choir member for the Diocese Evensong next week, I delete her voice mail and purge all my messages for good measure.

Hypocrisy would only be evident if you were playing "Christian Rock Band".

True enough.

I dunno. I just really, really, really don't want to sing in a church ever again if I can help it.

That's the difference in singing for personal enjoyment and...well..not.

Private (picked audience) vs. public.
Own initiative vs. outside influence.
Secular vs. religious.
Authority figure.

Unsurprising ;)

It's a sign that they've got a problem rather than you. You have a great voice, but understandably you don't like being ordered to do stuff you don't want to do. They've sucked the enjoyment out of it for you, so it completely goes counter to the point of singing in a choir anyway.

Continue to rock out in the privacy of your own home.
