About 15 years ago, when The University of Maryland was doing some remodeling of their main library, they had gated off an area about 20 feet around the library for everyone's protection.
Within that 20 feet area was a bronze statue of a terrapin named Testudo. Legend has it that if you rub his nose before a test, you'll get an A.
The first semester of remodeling the library, Testudo was stuck on the wrong side of the fence, so no one could rub his nose. Consequently, the average GPA of the university went down almost a half point.
Needless to say, they reworked the fence during break so that Testudo was now on the outside, and the GPA went back up to pre-fenced-in levels.
Psychological? Yes. But something to think about when rubbing a statue for luck.
