(Not that this is always a bad thing...)
Marna is another one of those friends connected because of someone else who saw something I wrote and said that was neat and passed it along and....
Well, you know how that goes. :)
I have an incredible amount of respect for her because on top of being a writer, a mom, a wife, and her own person, she willingly went into some of the more dangerous places I have ever heard described on a daily basis for work. Even more impressive, she frequently was involved in staring them down and telling them to get the hell out of her Library.
When someone's talk about their day includes "...and another couple of bullet holes in the front of the building", it makes you take pause, particularly when they're not in an active war zone or on military deployment. I don't know if I could willingly walk into that on a daily basis.
Even better, Marna has always been a person who believes that the library is there to share knowledge and help the community, not just blandly absorb books and collect late fines. She wants very much to be an educator and a resource, and is everything a good librarian should be.
I've been reading her journal during several periods of upheaval, including moving, bad relationships, writing (and publishing!) a novel, writing a bunch more, marraige, and the constant madness that is raising her kids.
Through all this, Marna shoulders the craziness, grits her teeth, and just keeps marching on. Her resiliency is incredible, and her grasp on her sanity is surprisingly good, all things considered. :)
In terms of how we interact, it's generally very geeky or talking about various forms of kitties and puppies that she's adopted, or those surprising moments of "Oh, you know them?" Funny in the good times, sympathetic in the rough times, and insightful in the reflective times, and usually with a decent bit of advice when asked for.
But really, the biggest reason why she is awesome, and the ONLY reason I really need to list, is because she has a Meet the Feebles icon. Top that!
