bzarcher: A Sylveon from Pokemon floating in the air, wearing a pair of wingtip glasses (Feather)

First, it was wonderful!

But, when you're dressed to the nines in your tux, and most men you see are in regular blazers, you think you're a little overdressed.

When a guy sits down next to you in a Batman Beyond t-shirt and jeans, you are really overdressed.

what did you see?
also, ooooor you could think of it as them being rather UNDERdressed and disrespectful of the ... uh, something high or venerable institution something something academic speak something... Although maybe by not dressing up to go to the opera ACTUALLY indicates that people are once again beginning to perceive it as a people's art and not an elitist "high art."
*cough* Aaaaanyway... yay Met!

Of was the season premier of Die Valkyrie, which, y'know, is why we thought we should dress up. :)

cool! I think another Wooster grad may have been there actually... Ronoldo (either late 07 or 08, I don't remember) mentioned he just saw it as well... so if you saw a shortish young gay Jamaican... ^_^

Hmm. Not sure about Jamaican. Had several Russians around, though. Oddly, they kept laughing during some of the big dramatic scenes. Maybe it's a comedy to them because it's happening to Germans...?

Yeah, I've only been to the Met once (the City Opera a couple more times) and while I wore a jacket, I confess I wasn't in full regalia. But it's, I think, the final run of their ring cycle (there was an article in the Times, I'm pretty sure) so I'd say go crazy. Glad to hear it was as awesome as hoped!

Heh. No worries.

It's the last with the Otto Schenk designs and production, anyhow.

Was this a matinee or an evening performance?

Evening! We actually didn't get back to the hotel until 1am.

Now that's just not right.

Matinees, I can understand dressing down a little, but when you're paying $80+ a ticket to an event, and it's not a sporting event, damn skippy I'm dressing up a bit!

When I work the opera performances here, the level of formality in the dress is always wide. Some are in full formal attire, some are in jeans, and some are lost in between. Its all about your comfort level:)

Yeah, I felt pretty good, just wondering if I went overboard. :)

Having been the guy at the Met in t-shirt and Jeans, I'm just happy you went and enjoyed it. It's been a looong time since I've been to the museums in New York.

I actually chickened out of the Egyptian Treasures to go walking in Central Park. :)

You can never be too overdressed. Put everyone to shame in your tux and WEAR it proud! ;)
Now, showing up and feeling under-dressed? That's grounds for embarrassment.

Heh. Ok, yes'm!

I always dressed semi-formal (black tie) for the Met.

Have you gone to Katz's yet?

What? You haven't? GTFO and take an F train downtown and go to Katz's. Take your ticket when you walk in, walk up to the meat counter, put a dollar in the overturned cup, and ask for pastrami on rye. Take the sample on the plate (that's what the $1 is for) and weep. Get half-sour pickles with it.

Get a soda from the end of the counter, then go sit in the middle (not against the wall, that's waiter service and who the hell cares about waiter service?). When you're done, pay (cash up front, credit cards at the drinks counter), make sure you get your ticket written on, and leave.

Turn left out of the door and walk down Houston St. toward the Williamsburg Bridge. After a block or so, make a left into Russ and Daughters. Enjoy.

Or walk up to 3rd Ave. and 8th St. (St. Mark's Place) and go to the Dessert Truck (desserttruck.com).

I am happy to report that we did, indeed, have Katz's. :) Dessert was from Junior's, though.
