Oct. 12th, 2002 12:43 amMmm. Long day. Putting it into words...well, I'll do what I can.
Work: Yaaaaaaaargh. Assholes -always- crop up right before I go on vacation. Today's flavor was one who had utterly corrupted both his floppies and his hard drive (If you don't have the power adapter for your laptop, and it's showing 2% battery charge, SAVE YOUR DAMN WORK AND TURN IT OFF. DON'T TRY TO SAVE RIGHT BEFORE IT DIES. Ahem. Sorry.)
So he's berzerking about needing that paper, and tries to snatch his disk out of my hands and put it into my machine's disk drive so I can run diagnostics on it faster. (Note: He jumped the desk to do this.)
"Look, sir, let me do my job, and trust me." (I said sir because we had 2 new people at the desk with me, and I was -trying- to set an example.)
-"Okay, okay, okay."
No good. Disk is FUCKED. Hard. He starts whining about office saying it might be able to read the file with a converter. (I would note it defaulted to the Turkish charset for this. This asshole was whiter than bread, and the paper was for an English class.) I try to tell him this -won't work- and he won't listen so I go to get the Office XP cd to try it.
I get back, and he snatches the CD out of my hand again. (Note that I'm getting a bit pissed, at this point.)
"Office XP??? But I have 2000!!!! This won't work! Why are you using it?"
-"Because we have office XP installed here, and if there is any chance of recovering your file, this is it. Now please give me that back, and sit down."
"BUT!"
-"Sit. Down. Please."
He did. And the file is so corrupted that it's still not savable.
While I am working on this, and one of the new people is on the phone with a full time staffer for suggestions, Asshole grabs the other new person, who he apparently knows.
"Can't you do this? He obviously doesn't know how to help me."
Handed him back his disk, told him we could not recover the file, and basically gave him the option of fucking off or fucking off and dying.
The drive home was -good-. Nothing like 70 miles of okay to good traffic to give you calmness and relaxation. (Okay, except for one fuckhead with a Lexus who kept weaving in and out of lanes, actually drove in the middle of two lanes for awhile, and cut me off twice (Nearly caused an accident each time, too.) But I got to see his ass pulled over by a State Trooper, so I got to laugh the rest of the way home. Vindictive? Me? Naah.)
Went to
ijikeru's to pick her up for the lecture. Saw Aset, who is in fact the cutest kitten in the world, and petted her and gave her the attention she deserved. Then we traveled onwards.
The lecture was on cultural themes in Japanese Animation, and the keynote was by a Ph.D who's recent book on the subject, including historical themes and treatments, matched damn well with my own work. So, I was quite glad Nikki told me of it. We arrived a bit early, and ended up chatting with the panelists. Dr. Napier (Said author), was especially glad to hear other people were doing work similar to hers, and we exchanged some information, partially professionally, and more because she wants to do major research on anime fans for her next book. (Nikki's on the list as well, along with quite a few from the lecture.)
The panelists all had posters for Spirited Away with them, and before I found out that they were the panel, I asked where they'd gotten them, and who's throat I might need to slit for one. (I was in a good mood. ;D) One of the panelists actually didn't have room for hers in her suitcase, and was flying out that night, and ended up giving me hers. I was quite shocked and delighted.
The lectures were damn good, and many fun questions asked and answered, though one semi-major oops was made that Nikki frothed over a bit, but I found hilarious. :D
So, from there, after touring the Anime art exhibit that was part of this lecture series, we went to dinner.
Dinner was done up at Bravo!, a rather neato and upscale Italian place. Good food, fairly good service, etx. Much conversation was made on the way, and while waiting for a table, especially on who we had become, what lessons had got us there, and who we might be in the future. Deep stuff. Fun, too.
Then
skarlette called, and my lady was traumatized by a truly nasty day. So I gave her comfort, and used Nikki as an impromptu caring device, as well as a good "gear-shifter" out of shock, and then proceeded to speak to the woman I dearly love at length.
Some of it was important, some was babble, and all of it was dear to me, and good.
I think sometimes we speak not so our lovers can hear our words, but just so the emotions of our voice can reach them, and soothe our linked souls through sound.
I miss her. Terribly. I love her.
After dinner, Nikki was returned home, with hugs and the like. Then I got my groceries, and came home, and to my surprise, found a -really- fairly good set of Vash The Stampede style yellow sunglasses on sale for $2.50 at Kroger. Probably won't last for a damn, but I may incorporate them into the halloween costume.
Ordered a set of black angel wings, too. 36" ones. Should have them by next week, and if the straps are too small, I intend to hijack my friend Anne from the theatre dept's costume shop for assistance.
Damn, but I wrote a lot.
Anyhow. Talk to you all later....no idea how much I'll be updating this weekend.
I love you, Lisa. Remember that, and always take me with you, if you need the strength I gladly offer.
