Oct. 15th, 2002 10:40 amOkay. Now I'm thinking.
This says that redheads need more anesthesia than other paitents because of a greater sensitivity to pain.
Now I -really- want to experiment if this can also be translated to a greater sensativity to pleasure. (Really, this is almost a given, since the study primarily characterizes it as a sensativity to -sensation-, but I want to know!) And in my case, since I have some red, but mostly highlights, does that mean that I don't experience quite as much pleasure as my redheaded, luscious, lovely, sinful, sweet...er. Um. Sorry. Rambling. That is to say I might not experience quite as much pleasure as my redheaded partner, but we still experience more pleasure than we might if we were blondes or brunettes?
Damn, but science turns me on some mornings.

Date: 2002-10-15 08:51 am (UTC)Nociception (pain) and otherwise miscellaneous tactile sensation have a few similar pathways, but not enough to make a low threshold on one enough to justify the conclusion of the other. The report specifically mentions pain modulation in the CNS, which I definitely know has no connection to pleasure experienced in the brain, using a different metabolic pathway, different ligand and different cellular receptor. While I'm much more likely to believe a report from Reuters than say, Time, it is still a layman report, and must be taken more as entertainment than actual science, as such articles have no peer review required to be published.
One thing is for certain - if you are a natural redhead, you're probably more susceptible to skin cancer.

Your explanation intrigues me. I must go to the library sometime to read up on it.

Date: 2002-10-15 12:39 pm (UTC)And heck, getting whapped in sword class hurts, yes, but not badly enough for the world to stop. Except when I got hit over the kidney that time... well, those five consecutive times in six minutes.
