Mind if I call you B? I'd feel weird calling you Pisces here for some reason. Anyways, I can see how it might make it more popular for the next while, I mean this is /Doom/ we're talking about.
However, I personally don't see it as /that/ big of a deal. I mean, granted, I like Doom as much as the next person, but these days all the FPSs seem the same. While story might be a little differernt, the goal is the same: Blow shit up. Kill stuff. It does tend to get mononomous after a while. Surely you can see where I am coming from? =0)
But, far be it for me to predict the unpredictable. All I can say is that if Microsoft intends to stick with their guns and not lower the price of the XBox later this year, they will more likely then not suffer a little, no matter what games the put out (as Sony is apparently lowering the PS2's tag to meet their predicted sales of 10.2 mil units this year apaprently).
All in all I think it will come down to a coin toss. On one hand you have the nice title of Doom 3 (even though I'd rather wait until 2004 and buy Halo 2, personally) and on the other you have the firm stance on the price freeze. So, yeah. I'm just talking in circles here and not really going anywhere. =0)
Past that, they /are/ lowering it a little. That $20 drop will probably actually make a bit of difference. But the reason I think it'll work it is that people will want Doom. Everyone's seen the teasers and trailers, and they're hungry for the taste. And as much as I want Halo 2 as well....we'll see. Both have the potential to dovetail nicely.
Depends on your point of view I suppose, it does nothing for me. I'd rather play the Final Fantasy series any day, or DOA when I"m in the mood to pound on things. : ) Sides, Quake was better than Doom. *Grins*
"I'm gonna sing the Doom song! Doom-doom doom doom-doom doom doom doom DOOM! Doom doom doom..."

I'm undecided on X-Box Doom. On the one hand, it's great and will be a big step forward for console gaming in general. On the other hand, I'll probably have built/gotten a computer specifically with Doom 3's behemoth system requirements in mind that will run it a lot better. Time will tell, I suppose.
I think the adoption of X-Box Live will be a bigger determinant of the X-Box's stature. It is probably the best on-line gaming setup for consoles right now. Sony's online seems pretty hit and miss with most favoring SOCOM, and Nintendo has a wide variety of online games including Phantasy Star, Phantasy Star and uh, Phantasy Star. ;-)
I think Microsoft's best shot right now would be to play that up above everything else, since that is where they are most differentiated from the other consoles.
The problem is that most people who are going to buy at least one console probably already have at least one. I doubt too many console sales atm are for first consoles of the generation.
Those that want an XBox for what's out already have one. Those that don't may look at it now that Doom 3 is announced for it, sure. But I suspect that most people who would ever seriously consider a second console also have a fairly high-end PC. i.e. one that can already run Doom 3. Making the idea of buying an XBox for Doom somewhat unlikely.
In other words, I'd be surprised if this actually moves that many units. Anyway, since the XBox is a massive loss leader, the last thing MS wants is for people to buy an XBox for one game. They need their entire game library to appeal to people in order to make any kind of profit on a console sale.
