Oct. 2nd, 2003 08:34 pmNow that I've finished the doubtless Boring Life Update...something else, semi-related.
Edit: I also refuse to apologize to the cows, now or ever.
Tell me about your favorite place to go for pizza or something similar when you were growing up. Preferrably one that was non-chain or somehow unique to your area compared to the other members of the chain. (Or, if it was just geographically wierd. IE: a Noble Roman's above the Mason-Dixon.)
In my case, there used to be a place near my Grandparents called 'The Depot'. Italian food, and good, but also with a neato atmosphere, including tons of train stuff (it was at an old train yard in Quaker Square), and model trains that not only ran above tables but beside them! And they had a train layout you could go watch and enjoy while waiting. Not as interactive as arcade games, but better and special.
It's gone, now. And I miss it.
So tell me about yours?

Date: 2003-10-02 06:10 pm (UTC)There was a Noble Roman's in Elkhart, Indiana up until about, oh... 1988, I believe. We used to go there when I was in middle school and my freshman year of high school.
Elkhart had a lot of good places to get pizza. There was Volcano's Pizza... great pizzas, awesome sandwiches. Colombo's on South main was my first exposure to Chicago-style deep dish, and I miss it terribly. Vesuvio's is also one of my childhood favorites-- and on a recent visit back, it still lived up to my memories.
Regrettably, the only pizza my wife seems to want to order is Donato's thin crust.

Date: 2003-10-02 06:55 pm (UTC)It's at the corner of Kenny and Henderson, in the shopping center near the Staples.
My buddies and I have gone there for going on six years now, and part of our tradition is to eat there around Thanksgiving. Usually a big group will be partly assembled at Mid Ohio Con and the rest meet up at the Restaraunt.
Early on, we imagined John Woo action sequences in the restaraunt, because there were cool screen partitions for cinematic yakuza to dive through. ;-)
The sushi offered is pretty decent, though I've heard that a couple places in town offer somewhat better sushi. I usually get the Katsu Don, though I am increasingly likely to get the Suki Yaki (which I once enthusiastically described to a first-time diner in the party as 'King Hell God Beef Stew').
It's also right next to Seafood Japan, which is a nice little Japanese grocery store, and it's across the way from a Borders book store we usually visit after dinner.
Make sure you get the green tea ice cream.

Date: 2003-10-02 07:24 pm (UTC)That said, I'm planning to gather some buddies and hit there when I take a week of vacation around the end of October. If you want, I'll see if I can put together a whole group to go there. I had also been thinking of making a movie/bookstore raid out of it too.
Want me to see if I can put a plan together, then pass along word?

Date: 2003-10-03 04:29 am (UTC)But as far as pizza: Napoleon's Pizza, who thankfully is still around though they don't deliver to our apartment block. Absolutely the best deep-dish pizza, even better than the one I tried in Chicago.
