Grr. Argh.

I swore against playing an MMORPG awhile ago. I tried the monthly fee thing with Simutronics and Gemstone, and I didn't really feel that I could justify $20 a month for it, when it came down to me paying instead of getting it for free with my ISP. I decided it was worth more to just save my money, and buy games I could play /offline/ if I wanted to.

But now...now I am tempted.

Final Fantasy XI. It calls at me. Claws at me. So many people I know having fun. Two clans I've been involved in getting linkshells together. And now my boss has it, and he won't stop talking about how great it is. Plus, I see so many FFTA things tied into it. And I /will/ be building a PC that will be able to play it.

But $50 plus $10 a month??

I just don't know if I want another monthly bill.

But it's so pretty...and I could be a black mage. Or a paladin. Or an archer. Or a ninja. Or a red mage. Or a soldier! And I could make stuff! And hook up with a good linkshell and go to town! Gah.

Damn you, Square-Enix!

I resist your evil!

(Though an elementalist would be kinda cool...is that an availible class in XI?)

Elementalists are not in the game. But this doesn't mean they can't be added in a later expansion. One of the nice things about the game is, you can change your home town. You can even change your job. The only thing that never changes is your character's initial appearance.

You can change jobs at any time and retain your old levels in a class for returning to it later.

Fair enough. Though is appearance at all modified by armor/etx?

Yes.

In fact, there's no way to distinguish one class from another, really, except for what they do in a combat situation without calling up an examine on them and looking at their level.

Unless you count artifact armors, which are class specific and very distinctive.

The main thing is that the game is only a year old and one expansion deep, so there isn't a lot of distinctiveness or equivalency across several differently appearing lines of equipment yet, so some of the equipment looks very simliar until you get over level 20 or so.

For example, a lot of warriors tend to look alike, with one or two variations inside of a theme. Though weapons among warriors are often a matter of varying taste and style.

All 'main' pieces of armor, head, arms, legs, body, appear on the character unless it's a really small piece of equipment, like a hairpin. Unforunaitely, cloaks don't appear for the sake of cutting down on the number of polygons flying around.

Wait until it comes bundled with the hard-drive for the PS2. Then, if you already have a hard drive, buy it cheap and used.

Oh, no. I'd buy it for PC, not PS2. :D

.02 of a dollar.

Urgh. I thought I could go with EVE, but after a few months it lost it's charm and I cancelled the account and swore off MMORPGs myself.

FFXI tempts me something harsh, but I really don't know. I hear all these great things, on one hand, but on the other hand I don't know if I have the time to justify monthly payment, and I don't know how long the game will be able to keep me until I eventually grow tired of it and/or move on to another game. With EVE, if I ever played anything else I felt guilty because I was wasting time on a game I wasn't paying for monthly... So... I think I'm not gonna get it, as much as I looooooooove the new chocobos. :\

We'll see. I actually haven't seen chocobos yet. I'm afraid they'd all go 'Kweh!' and I'd go 'Oh, god! I can't resist! Take me you feathered fools!', and it just wouldn't go well.

That depends on the situation.

For one, I know that EB World was selling the thing and giving people 20 dollar rebate coupons on their way out the door out where I live.

From: [identity profile] bzarcher.livejournal.com
That'd be tempting. But I'd fear I'd not get the coupon, because our EB sucks.

Well. Here's MY two gil on MMOGs in general. So long as you know folks you can hang out with and have a good time, it's all good. But when you don't know anybody and can't find an anchor for yourself, it becomes pure torment.

I would have never picked up FFXI if I didn't have a small army of people I'm associated with all decide to get the game as well and set up shop on a specific server in a specific town.

You've got a good point there, and believe me, it'd be on my mind.

I don't think it's worth it. I'm sure the game is gorgeous (I personally really liked FFX), but you're talking about shifting it to online.

You know a few people with it, right? How many little pricks are out there incomparison? Do you really want to lose interest in a game because of that? Heck, you know how it can be on MU* at times. :>

I'd say save the money instead. Or get a game that you've wanted for a while. Wait a few months if you reeeeeeeeeally want to try it to gauge reactions of your boss, etc. Worst that could happen is that you're a bit behind the pack.

We'll see. The lag issues are apparently pretty low unless you're on dialup, and even then I hear it isn't bad.

The asshole factor is one of the things I'm using to keep myself back. Well, that and the fact I really don't have that much money to toss around right now.

I feel no real lag.

I used to play Dragonrealms like a mofo! That's how I found my FeralFish... *purrs*
What'd you used to play?
Also, I'm trying so hard to avoid MMORPG's for the fact that they're costly and addictive to me.
Wishing you luck! hehehe

Those were the days. Thanks!

So you played Gemstone? I played for a wee touch of a tiny bit.

I was Trader Elliana Oronia and Empath Earenya Orod-na-thon mostly. I played upwards of about 20 or so characters throughout my stay with Simu. I also playtested Herc and Xena and wandered the streets of Modus Operandi just to try it out. I still prefer MUDstyle multi user games over the graphics driven ones. Call me old-fashioned and I won't complain.
