May. 16th, 2002 03:16 pmThe international student who is supposed to be helping by working here is starting to get to me.
1: He's worked here almost as long as I have, yet knows nothing, and bitches constantly about everything.
2: He won't stop whining about how hot it gets outside. It's only up to 70! AT MOST!!!
Oh. And he whines about the rain a lot.
3: He tries to skip out, leave early, or in other ways do stuff without actually working. Constantly.
I've tried to be nice. Yet, when I give him something to do, this happens:
"Avishek. Here's the iMac for the new Admissions lobby. I've already imaged it, all you have to do is get an ethernet cable, take this checklist, and make sure to set up the "Admissions Laserjet 4" in their zone. Okay?"
-"Umm...can I wait 10 minutes?"
"Why?"
-"Then I can pick up my check on the way."
"You can get it when you're on the way back. They need this down there now."
-"Okay."
*20 minutes later*
-"I forgot the ethernet cable"
*5 minutes after that*
-"I forgot the checklist"
*30 minutes later*
-"I can't get an ethernet connection from the ports in the lobby. I tried calling Telcom, but no-one answered, so I just left everything there after I left telcom a message."
"Including the dolly, the box, the cds, and the checklist?"
-"Well, yeah. That way Telcom will know what computer it is."
"...."
-"Should I go back and get that stuff, and just leave a note?"
"Yeah, that'd probably be for the best."
------------------------------------------
He hasn't returned since then...I'm hoping he will be back before his shift ends at 5. Maybe.
But dear christ, part of me wants to strangle him. How much can you fuck up an iMac setup???? The ports aren't his fault (unless it turns out he was trying to put the cable into the phone jack, which is possible), but....aargh. Did I mention that the only reason I didn't do this myself was because two people FROM Admissions are sitting in the lab designing their new webpage, and I had to help with that?
In other happy news: The building I'm in is mostly international students. Apparently the South African ones seem to think my name sounds Afrikaaner, and the Muslim ones think I look like a jew, judging by some of the stuff people were muttering as I went past, or the ways I got looked at when I went to grab something out of the room at lunch. First time in 3 years at this college I really felt I needed to lock the door.
Fun summer ahead. Really fun summer.
