Go to the Keys and IDs department because they called about a machine with a bad power switch. First the student working there tried to convince me that the machine was fine and all they really needed was a better (read: Bigger) monitor than the 15" one they had. And her supervisor was 'out', whatever that means.
Conveniently, she kept maneuvering to keep me from seeing the machine, until I caught a hint of BRIGHT GREEN post-it, and asked what that was, if there wasn't a problem.
Particularly since, when she moved, it was clearly marked 'Turn-On button is fragile or broken. Push gentle."
Did I mention that sign had an identical twin on the bezel just above the switch?
Now, I hear a lot of people's turn-on buttons are pretty fragile, but I won't go into that. Instead, I gave her the stare of DOOM and asked her to please let me work on the machine. She shut it down with a few glares in my direction, and said that it really wasn't a big deal, because her boss had 'fixed it with some tape.'
Oh, really. Funny how they're not supposed to be cracking cases.
After opening the machine up and removing the front bezel, I can in fact see the long loops of scotch tape that are holding the power switch to the bezel since they apparently hit it hard enough to snap the plastic clamps that are supposed to keep it there. Including the tape that was over the exposed leads and wires.
Wincing, and glad I had brought a complete switch/bezel assembly with me, I replaced the front bezel and switch, re-wired the switch and LEDs to the board, and got the hell out of there before I either started laughing uncontrollably or tried to kill someone.
I kept the post-it notes. I've been showing them off to the office. These are trophies, baby.
Well, at least it's snowing.
