So I downloaded UT2k4's demo.

In the words of Dennis Leary?

"A 6 foot erection with a fucking cheeseburger on the end of it!"

The guns, the levels, the new stuff, the turrets, the vehicles...

You got your Unreal Tournament in my Tribes!
You got your Tribes in my Unreal Tournament!
Hey.....!!!

And the best part? The real sniper rifle is back! The lightning gun is, unfortunately, still there, but they aren't trying to make you think it's a sniper rifle anymore! And that REAL sniper rifle is SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET.
The proof? 30 kills IN A ROW on AS-Convoy, all with the sniper rifle. 15 of which were head shots.

If you can see it, you can hit it. If you can hit it, you can kill it.

Yaay, sniper rifle. Yaay, Assault.

I will be trying this out as soon as possible.

HeadShot

Boy, it's a good thing I'm leaving the day after tomorrow for Canada.

I have a new computer with raw power out the wazoo, and an itchy trigger finger. It's been far, far too long. I'd have to come forth and well...

bring it.

Unless of course, the demo fails to be Multiplayer, in which case I cry 'fie!'.

What is up with the hate-on everyone had for the lightning gun?

Good man.

I also suggest the theraputic experience of double-assault rifle kills.

You gots your multiplayer, you gots your instant action in all the modes, and the only grumble is you only have 2 skins (2 male, 2 female) to choose from.

But on the upside, you get equipped with Girl.

Why HATE is a good thing.

By itself, the lightning gun is okay. It takes too long to reload between shots, but I understand why they did that to balance it.

My major complaint is that in 2k3, they replaced one of the best weapons period (the standard sniper rifle) with the lightning gun, and expected that no-one would care. And we cared. Because it was a poor replacement.

Head shots blow

Too many bodies just flipping around. Rocket launchers at least have notable in close damage to you.

The only head shot weapon I liked was the razor launcher, cause you were almost as likely to lop off your own head as an opponents.

(Scopes make a bad thing even worse, too)

Bah.

I drop the sniper if they get close enough that I don't have to use the scope to see 'em. And while I admit the razor launcher was cool, my preferred tools for inclose management are the minigun or the flak. Mmmm. Flak.

The sniper rifle from UT was always the most unbalanced weapon in the game -- but it was also the most effective and most easily accurate once you accustomed yourself to the speed and style of the game. I played Quake 3 before UT, and once I started playing UT, I was sold just from the (imo) better feel of the game. 'course, I only ever played the game usually in single-player with bots, except for LAN parties...

The lightning gun was a serious let-down because most of the maps weren't well designed for its use and if you had played UT before 2k3, the instinctive response was "WTF!? What happened to the damn sniper rifle?!" It's also telling that it wasn't long until someone put out a mod that made the lightning gun act more like the original sniper rifle.

Still, the sniper rifle *was* unbalanced, and it was entirely too easy to get headshots during the frenetic close-up firefights in the game. Still, I admit, I *loved* the sniper rifle -- it did great damage even if you didn't get the headshot on the first click...

Meanwhile, 2k3 did have built-in support for *a* vehicle, the crummy Bulldog, which wasn't well designed, but you had to tweak with the console and mods in order to get it during a game. But, it's obvious they'd been considering it for a while (after all, UT had built-in support for the monsters from the original Unreal lurking in the engine's bowels). Considering the success of Halo (Xbox or PC, at least) and Tribes, it's no surprise they made vehicles a part of 2k4. Halo is cool and all (okay, very cool), but it's a much more sedate game in regards to the pace -- after playing Halo PC for several weeks, it took a bit to get back into the rhythm of 2k3 or UT, and bot support helps insure that there's usually something happening at almost any point of a game.

Oh yeah, 2k4's inclusion of the Skaarj I find cool if only because it implies continuity within the Unreal "universe" (yeah, it's just a FPS, but it's still nice to see internal consistency).

Also, I thought that in many ways 2k3 was an inferior game to UT if only because they seemed to opt for a much more Quake 3 style of play (and weapons) than what had made UT unique and fun for me. Texas Office LAN parties were always UT-Diablo 2-Starcraft focused, and never Quake 3 or that sort of game. Although I'd love to get a 5+ Halo PC LAN party going...

But aside from the balanced reload, it performed exactly the same..

The trigger delay and the mushier aiming, to me, were also problems.

Honk!

See, I liked the Lightning Gun because it eliminated one of the big problems I had with original UT: an all powerful hitscan weapon with no tracer, which made camping practical (if I want that, I'll play Instagib!). The Lightning Gun leaves a visible track to where it was fired from, making campers obvious.

I gotta say; that one truck where you hit the fire button and it honks a big ol' semi-truck horn? BEST FPS VEHICLE EVAR. Any other tactical characteristic is utterly irrelevant in the face of such awesomeness.

*honk*

Also: John Woo-style Assault Rifle Akimbo Action! And the new weapon-specific getting-blowed-up animations are cool.

In general, it makes me want a new gaming rig, but it's highly awesome, and definitely a notch above UT2K3.

Eh, The trigger delay was the only reason I could ever kill anyone. The aiming wasn't a problem for me either.

But I can't snipe for beans. Gimme a rocket launcher or autogun of some kind.
