I think the problems stem from 2 core faults:

1: This guy is normally a Mac user, and while he is a very competant Mac user, he shouldn't have felt he could do this by himself.

2: This machine was purchased with a grant, so his department treated it as 'theirs' and not the College's, and therefore ignored everything we have in place or told them they ought to do. The look on the dept. chair's face as I explained to her everything I cleaned off, what I had to do, and the fact that this could have been mostly prevented if virus scanning software had been at least installed and configured will likely lead to this attitude being, ah...curtailed. At least for now.

A few months after Blaster nailed our network but good, someone openes just -one- Email attachment and voila: Two network drives chock full of virii goodness. Our sysadmin has not been having a good day either. :/
