Work's been a fun little meatgrinder all morning since I got back, but I'm finally on my feet, I think.

Oddly enough, I ended up leaving Howard Stern on for the drive back, and had a minor revelation: He's not such a bad guy. Sure, he did a little bit of stuff that made me roll my eyes a bit (fart stuff, some jokes, mentioning that he didn't see that much wrong with being harder on suspected terrorists), but there was quite a bit more that I could dig. He's very anti-censorship, even before the Clear Channel stuff, he was pointing out glaring omissions or unsupported statements in the news that I'd had issues with, took on problems with the administration's support of outsourcing, and he was very behind the troops out in the military. (He even had some on as guests today.)

He's very much in the "I may not like what the administration is doing, but I support the troops 100%" camp, and seemed genuinely concerned about the lives of those in the field. Very cool.

I never thought that much of the guy, and I feel a bit bad that I tarred him up without ever taking a listen, now.

Oh yea. Sure his humor is low brow, but really, I think he's rather...creative...with it. No beef from me towards him. I never really listened to him, cause I never listen to the radio, but I never had any problems. Shame he's going off air. He was pretty much the pioneer of shock jock radio.

I'm betting he won't go totally 'off air', just yet. If his local station will let him keep on, he will, and from there I'd bet he'll go into Sattelite radio.

This is an important lesson I hope more of the people I encounter on LJ and in the "real world" take to heart: don't judge things until you have some direct experience of it, or can put yourself in the place of the person you're giving the dirty eye to.

I'm sort of the opposite. I tenderly wait for the fart jokes and tend to roll my eyes when he tries to play political activist. For all the anti-censorship rage Stern has, he'd be nothing without a line to cross, that's his shtick. He has a grasp on most issues in a manner that suggests he takes what news networks say as gospel, and while his coarse, unrefined and raw style works perfect for the discussion of sex and other bodily functions, it just tanks when he wants to be serious.

It's a different strokes thing. Though I'd say he's being less gospely about the networks. He was going after CNN and NBC pretty hard on some stuff this morning when I was listening.
