Bethesda High School Seniors Face Ban, Intimidation for Opposing NSA Condoleezza Rice
Students at Bethesda Chevy Chase High School say their First Amendment rights are under attack because they plan to protest National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice when she speaks at their graduation ceremony on June 4. Students say school administrators are threatening to ban students from the graduation ceremony if they follow through with the protest and have been intimidating students for circulating a petition against Rice.
About one-fourth of the senior class signed a petition against having Rice speak at their graduation ceremony, but the administration still plans to go forward with the event and is demanding that the student government write a letter of apology to Rice. Students also say a teacher who is sympethetic to their cause has come under fire by the administration. Regardless, students plan to protest against Rice.
