What the...?

It looks like slashdot got slashdotted.

It's called Farked now, because fark.com often farks Slashdot.com.

Bah, humbug. Slashdot's better than fark.

I agree wholeheartedly, but slashdot doesn't fark fark. Fark farks slashdot.

Slashdot's gotten slightly better in the past several months--- for a while, the signal to noise ratio just got so low as to be unbearable.

This may be partially because Slashdot has the taste not to link to fark, preventing the slashdot effect.

(I'm sticking to my slightly older school geek cred on this terminology.)

It helps to have filters running, I've noticed.

Oh, I'm not talking about the comments--- I think the general quality and 'geek value' of stories that got posted went to hell in a handbasket in 2000. A spike of quality in late 2001 carried over into 2002... but overall?

I've been underwhelmed by the website.

Actually, I filter my 'front' news page, too, to only show specific topics.

But, I agree it's a very up and down thing, by the nature of how they collect stories, but that's true of most operations like that.

Topics?

I pretty much just use the poll and usually end up voting for cowboy neil.

That, and command-F-ing my way through the topics, searching for the word 'Funny'.

MacSlash has gone even further downhill, too. It's scary.

I wouldn't say one is better than the other. Fark has a much broader appeal than Slashdot, and events/links/stuff get on the radar much faster at Fark. Slashdot has better commentary, but only along comparatively few (and generally technical) axes.

And Fark's photoshop contests, complete with cliches and the ridicule thereof, usually range from amusing to internet gold.

That said, my truck is identifiable by its /. sticker. :-)

I also mix my daily blogging with some Boing Boing and a bit of Metafilter, with some occasional Plastic when I need to read some severely snarky stuff.
