Hey, cute.

The Commonwealth of Virginia just passed a law that makes Jim Crow look remarkably tame. Over the objection of her Governor, the voters, and multiple major corporations.

I can't remember a state legislature actually passing laws with a stated intent of forcing groups out of the state since Utah's early history. (Before someone cites the Nisei and internment, that was a federal statue. No less disgusting, but slightly different.)

Now, if you live in Virginia, please write your state rep and state senator and ask them what the FUCK they're thinking?

I just love how this flies in the face of pretty much everything that America is supposed to protect, yet it came out of the state legislature with a veto-proof majority.

Virginia is without a doubt the most reliably conservative state in the Union. I can't say I'm surprised by this, but it looks like this bill has a date with the Supreme Court.

The thing that really surprised me was the veto-proof majority. I really didn't expect it to have that big of a swing in the state legislature.

However, hopefully the Virginia State Supremes or the U.S. Supremes will, indeed, smack it down.

However, the period where this will be on the books and used as precedent could get really nasty.

Anal retentive here: I don't think (could be wrong) that laws are precedents, only rulings in prior cases.

If it's a law on the books, I'm pretty sure it can be used in case law, but I'm not sure. :/

But I agree that while this law is on the books, it could be really nasty if it's enforced.

This kind of law really makes me sad. By denying any citizen their right to live happily, to spend the rest of their lives with a person, and to have that recognized by the law, makes me genuinely sad.

It's a tragedy. It's also going to be smacked hard once it's challenged, but it's a tragedy nonetheless.

I've yet to learn of a case of state-sponsored bigotry or discrimination that, while ghastly, did not eventually fail.

This is bad. But this, too, will come to pass.

Uh... WTF!?!?

I'm expecting this to be one of the shortest-lived state laws ever.

I certainly hope so.

Is there a way to enact economic sanctions against Virgina for human rights violations? Bloody hell, this makes some of the old Soviet Union look tame.
