Now that I'm in a bit more stable frame of mind, some kitten details.

The kitten is a girl, and for some reason, my sister decided that she needed to be named Poppy. (I personally preferred the suggestion of Oreo, or Cow, but it was at least better than the 'Harold' that Alison was originally dead set on when she though that Poppy was a boy. Alison says she looks like a Harold, or like a Poppy. I say that Alison's suffering from associative dementia.)

She is VERY tiny. Despite being a longhaired kitten, I don't think she's more than a foot long right now, including her tail, and I was easily able to hold her in the palm of my hand a couple times while she was exploring. (She really likes to sit on my lap, or to get held. And she thinks climbing on people is great!)

She's got a very pink nose, a somewhat puggish face, and very large, very round green eyes. Her fur is a white base with a lot of black and brown/tortiseshell spots. Most of her face is black with white accents. She's very 'poofy', right now, and it's terribly cute. Her tail is also pretty short at the moment. The vet doesn't think she'll get much bigger than Brando is now (about 6 and 3/4-8 pounds.)

She's quite energetic, now that she's getting used to the house, and really likes to chase and pounce things. Even if she's occasionally just pouncing the carpet.

She also is a very big 'people' kitty. When we left her upstairs to nap last night and so that we could eat some dinner, she woke up and started crying so loudly that we couldn't miss it. We went back upstairs and the minute we showed up she quieted down, started playing, and eventually got purring. She wouldn't sleep in her bed by her temporary litterbox (we're keeping her separated from Brando to start), but settled down immediately as soon as she was able to jump onto a pillow and curl up with a person. She also seems to be drinking and eating normally, and though there have been a few minor accidents before we could get her into the new litterbox, she's starting to get the hang of it. (She was fairly housebroken when we picked her up, I suspect it's just the different environment and all that. Possibly also that the shower mat in the bathroom does have a pretty similar texture and such, and it's right NEXT to the litterbox, so that was also re-arranged.)

Speaking of how Brando is getting along with her: Brando ended up forcing her way into my parent's bedroom (where we're keeping Poppy for now, due to the ensuite bathroom. It's a way to keep the litterbox and food there, but give her room to explore and play.) She initially was very studiously ignoring all signs of Poppy, even when the two ended up less than 2 feet from each other. She sniffed around everything for awhile, then finally decided to actually sniff the kitten. She hissed and then left.

About a half hour later, Brando came back, sniffed around again, sniffed Poppy, Poppy sniffed her back, and Brando didn't seem that happy, but didn't hiss or growl. She just turned around and walked out in a touch of a sulk.

Hopefully, this will mean that the two will get along eventually. I suspect it'll be a week or two before Brando's really able to deal with it well, but I also think she will come around. We're trying to give her just as much (if not more) attention than we do Poppy, and to be honest, I think Brando's been pretty lonely since we lost Reese last year. I suspect that she'll come around to the idea of having someone to play with/harass pretty soon. For now, we're putting rubber bands over the doorknob and an anchor so that Brando can't force her way in, and we'll probably try to re-introduce them to each other in a few days with Brando on a leash. However, the fact that Brando only hissed once, and hasn't gotten aggressive since, is probably a good sign.

Pictures will come soon, as my dad had quite a bit of fun with her and his digicam.

Don't leash Brando.

From a long-time cat cohabitor, letting things go as they're going is the best way. Maybe bringing Brando in being cuddled or whatever she stands for while introducing will help make Brando more secure.

However, Poppy and Brando seem to be getting along quite well. As long as Brando doesn't start protesting, you are golden.

The main problem is that Brando doesn't like held. She'll let you pet her, especially if she comes to you, but not holding very often. However, I'll keep that in mind.

I suspect that it'll be fine. I heard that she hissed a little again very early this morning when she came to the door and Poppy meowed from the other side, but then she came back to the door again, too. *shrug*

I find that bringing the kitten to the main cat, instead of the main cat to the kitten, tends to assuage any feelings of being 'replaced'. I had to do this when I brought Sara home from the vet clinic - I had to introduce Sara to them by bringing her to Miki and Patches. Otherwise they feel threatened and they end up fighting for 'dominance'.

Of course, I had three crazy cats (Miki was a six pound cat who thought she was as big as a Doberman and had no fear; Patches is as stupid as a dog; Sara was insanely timid), so YMMV. :D

Hooray for kittens! I remember when Mac was small and cute. Now she's a big pest - but a beautiful one.

Pictures! Pictures! We demand pictures!

That's kinda what we had in mind, too, until Brando jumped the gun.

The leash would mostly be just to be able to get them apart if needed.

We'll see how it goes. Hopefully they'll settle donw relatively quickly.

Three words for you: laser light pen.

Though not right now. Balled bits of tinfoil or paper? :)

And that sounds a lot like Mac when she arrived. Has Poppy tried doing a Matrix-style dash across the middle of the back of the couch? :>

Kitty kitty kitty!

I'm sure she'd try the couch trick if she could. :D As it is, she's getting very good at jumping off my parent's bed. Jumping back up is....somewhat less smooth.

Ahahaha, yes. Mac couldn't jump up. She mountain-climbed her way up onto our bed. ARGH. XD

Nowadays, though, she clears four feet easily. Wow.

We'll see. I'm betting that Poppy will get some good jumps soon. She can already do a foot high jump without a problem when she's going after strings or feathers.

The problem with a kitten is that
It grows up to be a cat.

Oddly enough, [livejournal.com profile] ptika said the exact same thing yesterday. Almost to the word.

It's some poem by someone. I don't remember it exactly, or who that someone was.

Hmmm.

But it could be...

CONSPIRACY.

Or not. Oh, well. :D

Well, yes, it is that, I'm just letting you know where we get our conspiracy ideas.
