Argh.

"I'm going to go out Monday at Lunch and I'll get the replacement router, but I don't want anything hooked in directly until then."

"Oops. Sorry, I forgot. I'll go after dinner."

"I didn't end up feeling like it. I'll try to go tomorrow, sometime."

3 chances, says the Buddha.

If he hasn't replaced the router by tonight, to hell with them. I've been playing by his ultra-paranoid and often stupid rules since I came back to their house, and I'm sick of it. My family's inability to follow up on their word has been an infinite source of frustration to me, and one that I will no longer tolerate.

Besides, something tells me that if I hooked the wireless direct to the cablemodem, and loopbacked the broken router, he wouldn't even be able to tell if it was working or not.

I am tired of denying myself human communication.

Interesting.

Of course, he could also put a software firewall on the PC he uses for Wendy's VPN business-- block anything that doesn't come from the router's IP address, so that other hosts on the home LAN can't tinker with it.

But that would make sense.

Sense? HAH!

Let me explain my dad's 'ideal' security setup.

1: Hardware firewall.
2: Router
3: Software firewall on every machine. (In fact, on my sister's machine and I assume my dad's as well, since he configured both, there are /2/ different firewalls. Windows and McAffe.)
4: WEP encryption on all wireless.
5: Router and WAP are both configured to deny addresses/access internally unless your MAC has been entered into a table of 'authorized' users.

Paranoid doesn't even begin to go far enough.

I uhh...sometimes use Windows firewall. Unless I'm playing a game. In such case, my computer is naked to the world.

A firewall is never bad idea. But there is such a thing as taking it too far...

Windows' firewall is actually functional? I turned it off and run just McAfee.

It's better than standing out in the rain with nothing, but McAfee is much more like a real umbrella.

My router has a built-in firewall, but it didn't like eMule so I put my desktop as the DMZ. Kerio's nice for a free firewall.

What, does everyone on this thread have something against Zonealarm?

ZA isn't bad, but I like the McAfee suite because you get the Virus Scan, Firewall, and a lot of other security/safety bundle stuff on one disc.

Actually, a ZoneAlarm update broke my Internet connection (and computer) last weekend. I had to run in Safe Mode just to uninstall the accursed thing.

I can't say it's ever broken my computer...crashed it once or twice, yes, but not that badly. But then again, I didn't install IE6 for a long time because it screwed my computer up comprehensively twice. The second time was a frsh install...

You can never tell what'll blow a computer up, sometimes.

Point. I use VET for virus scanning simply because it's an Aussie product, and thus, is barely known outside Australia. No virus writers trying to target it specifically. :D

Well, yes. But that's because your code comes from the majestic koala...
