I think it's funny from the sheer idiocy of the statement. "They want to die, so we're just letting them do that! Aren't we cool?"

I think it's horrifically arrogant because it's a whole playing God over the knowledge of who livesa nd who dies. And for that I'm offended.

I did everything I could to voice my protest and distaste for the Iraq invasion until the hour before the first bomb was dropped. Now, I give the boys (and girls) out there every last prayer to win the war as quickly and decisively as possible.

Your reaction to the quote is the proper one, I think. The guy was making a humorous observation, and considering where he is, I afford him a lot of slack for one off-color comment.
