Ok.

The cat just turned on my bedside lamp.

As in she walked up to it, meowed at it, put her paws on the switch, and turned it clockwise until the lamp came on.

THEY HAVE BECOME TOOL USERS.

Hide the tuna. Run like hell.

And we were all assuming that evolution would only continue to better humans.

in 50,000 years our bones are going to be chipped out of rock and the homofelines are going to wonder who we were.

/sigh. I just wish I knew what the hell I was doing after school.

I don't want to force a kitty through a buch of moving and upheaval.

Believe me, that's a lot of why we waited.

Honestly, if Princess hadn't left Patches + litter on my parents' doorstep, we'd probably still be waiting.

It helps that I do have what looks to be a very solid career ahead of me at Sterling plus this place is quite nice until such time as I decide I want to own a home, but you never know.

(Besides, I'd think you of all people would be talking about how you knew this day would come, and had shotguns akimbo in preparation.)

Shotguns, bah! Feet work just fine for keepin' 'em in line, and overly long jeans that drape over your toes are effective defense against claws, teeth, and other pointy-ends.

Mac's able to operate doors. She understands them just fine, she just has issues with turning doorknobs because her paws keep slipping. They've always *been* tool users, they're just being held back by that 'thumbs' thing.

I've been sent by [livejournal.com profile] metaquotes.

*warily eyes own two cats; one is attacking my bedroom curtains, the other rolling non-stop over the carpet*

Yes. Our future lords and masters.

wandered in from [livejournal.com profile] metaquotes...
So? cats have always been tool users. All of the six I co-habit with know how to use the TV remote for example. [they like nature programes mostly].

They sure as heck know what the can-opener is for, and have been known to dig it out of the drawer, and drop it at my feet as "hint" they want feeding.

Our alpha-male tomcat, K'zin figured out what the garage door opener is for, and used it from inside the house, to *thwap* the next-doors dog when it wandered into the drive...
I swear K'zin was sniggering as he did so.

It's just the thumbs thing that stops them taking over completely, which wehn you consider that's probably the only reason we're tolerated, that's a good thing!

There's a woman, and I can't remember her name, who is breeding cats.

More to the point, she is breeding them for intelligence, and for opposable thumbs.

Then again, I've had cats that I will swear until my dying day would read books (they turned the pages and everything), so I've already accepted my status in Grand Scheme of Things.

I got Metaquoted? Wow.

Past that....good lord. You make me want to start locking her out when I sleep, for fear she's going to do something horrible to me in the night.

wow, and she even tested it to see if you had installed a clapper on it before resorting to manual (cat-ual felinual?) labor.

heh. i just looked at your location, and they can't be related; but one/both of them may have commuted to the secret cat school. we should really try to get to the bottom of this.

I think you should come here and clean it up.

And I, for one, welcome our new feline overlords. I'd like to remind them that as a trusted librarian, I can be helpful in rounding up others to toil in their underground catnip caves.

My cat used to hide in the wardrobe or under the bed and get out after I shut the door and was mostly asleep. I'd feel this slight thud onto the bed and a little warm shape curling up next to me. It was so sweet, but I couldn't let her (much) - I'm allergic. (Why did I have a cat? She was extremely neglected, adopted me, and I didn't know how allergic I was at the time.)

Mine's been after the power tools (http://robling-t.livejournal.com/85705.html) lately. If we catch them conferring over blueprints, it's past time to start worrying in earnest...
