Hmmm...news.
May. 26th, 2005 11:27 amPerusing the news: Here's what stands out.
-Odd atmospheric disturbance on Titan (COOL.)
-Colin Powell wants to buy the Washington Nationals (COOL!)
-College Board making AP courses easier (Wimps.)
-Hot goth chick leaving NCIS: 50% of viewers expected to do the same.
Doing this because it's better than stressing about finding out that a project I've been working on for 6 months may be canceled at the whim of our new manager.

Date: 2005-05-26 07:06 pm (UTC)Fact is AP classes aren't going to get you into a better college - a 4.0 in all the normal versions will easily get you into the college of your choice. AP classes won't do shit for landing a real world job, either - I was just confounded last month when a resume for a position I'm hiring had their AP classes listed on there, as if that carries weight in the professional world. If all an AP class is is the nominative version with the volume turned up (as today's paper is suggesting), that's not helping.
Frankly, I think the entire AP concept is a racket. To offer my own personal experience, I took a single measly AP class over my entire education, and largely that was because the Quiz Bowl teacher taught it, not because I planned on going into US History. It really didn't set me back behind all the AP status seekers if my achievements today are any measure.

Date: 2005-05-26 07:39 pm (UTC)I'll agree that if you're a 4.0 student in regular or AP, it won't matter, and I'll agree that if you think getting a 5 in the AP test will help for jobs, you're wrong 99% of the time. (A professional academic mentioning a high set of AP test scores, especially for another academic position, I could see, maybe, but that's about it.)
When I took AP classes, we had a totally different set of materials than the standard classes, had to write college style papers, and generally got what seemed to be harder tests and more in-depth work. It could still be a racket, but if the idea was to be better prepared for a four year college, it did do that for me.
