But hey, that logic would probably work on the raving religious types to get them to allow gay marriage. "If they marry each other, they can't reproduce, and they'll all die off!" Yep, that'd work.

It's based on a flawed understanding of homosexual genetics. I doubt gay marriage would result in a decrease at all in the gay population.

But, to the average person who doesn't understand genetics beyond, "Wow, they talk about it a lot on TV", I could see how someone would decide that.

I suppose, but that knocks the joke down from witty satire to taking potshots at the stupid. By all intents it seems the author understands this, but runs the joke with blinders on for the sake of the punchline.
