Halliburton hired by the Navy to start doing repairs on Naval facilities in NOLA

Now, isn't it me, but didn't these guys totally embezzle millions, perhaps BILLIONS of dollars earmarked for rebuilding infrastructure in Iraq, and we're giving them and their 'wholly owned subsidiary KBR' even MORE federal money, on what seems like a pony show bidding process or another a no-bid contract, to go out and rebuild infrastructure again?

Something doesn't seem smart.

Also: More good news about the gentleman who is currently in charge of FEMA operations down there.

Well, of course they're getting the contract. They're good buddy Cheney still in the white house.... it's really not surprising.

KBR was assigned the work under a "construction capabilities" contract awarded in 2004 after a competitive bidding process.

It's certainly fishy, but does that constitute a "no-bid" contract? Anyone? It does say "competitive bidding process," which certainly doesn't exclude "considerably rigged" but does sort of allude to *some* kind of bid system being used.

Let's say that I'm /very/ skeptical about that bidding process, and I'll revise my entry.

Is it just me, or did previous presidents (and presumably, by extension, VPs) try to divest themselves of financial ties and responsibilities to avoid even the appearance of impropriety? Didn't real estate dealings get the Clintons in major deep-water-pardon-the-expression-scandal-territory? Where are the media and congressional accusations? Where is my impeachment trial?

I wasn't planning to keep this icon, but it may be useful after all.

Well, to be fair, the real estate dealings or Bush Sr.'s Savings and Loan games didn't get them into QUITE enough hot water for impeachment - it takes a mistress for that.

All said, I'd love if someone could get information about Bush or Cheney's mistresses into the papers. I bet that'd get some tasty moral outrage up.

... he was qualified for the slot as deputy director how, exactly?

Although in the man's defense, New Orleans getting pasted isn't exactly a regular occurance during hurricane season. Unlike, say, Florida, where the agencies involved have long experience dealing with. (They probbably also have pre-positioned emergency gear and supplies to work with for places that get hit regularly.)

However, a hurricane above cat 2 hitting NOLA has been on the FEMA list of "Worst case scenarioes" for the past 10 years. So that's really not an excuse.
