ATTN: Rabid Browncoats,

Where is your God now?

Actually, I do feel sad about this myself, but it's happened and done. And like a fair amount of casual fans I talk to, the rather stalkery behavior of a good chunk of the fanbase as the movie ran put me off of it for awhile, and I suspect did more harm than good.

It's amazing how much fans who do not comprehend that one's interest in the topic is middling at best can put you off something. I have yet to read more than three pages of a Pratchett novel for that exact reason, and [livejournal.com profile] z_gryphon will never, as long as he lives, touch Sandman because of people insisting that he HAD to like it and if he WASN'T reading it it was because something was WRONG with him, etc.

Like any other type of religous zealot, they see only the Believers and the Unconverted who haven't quite gotten it yet. I should know - I used to be a pretty bad one myself for certain things, but I think I've been growing out of that.

A bit sad, but I suspected the additional films would be a longshot after seeing it. And without knowing about the large collection of overzealous fans.

*nods* Too much in too little space, with not enough pacing.

More a relative lack of attendance at one of Pittsburgh's largest major theartres, during a not-insanely-late evening showing.

But you're right, in that the film really needed to be at least twice as long to fit everything in and do it properly.

I got into Firefly after seeing Serenity, and it's a shame he's not continuing it, but I don't think I'd want to see it without Wash anyway. *shrugs*

*smiles* Yeah, Wash is one of the better parts of the show, really. (On the subject of Wash dying, I reject Joss' reality, and substitute my own.)

Yeah, me too. Wash was sent to an intensive care unit with the best doctors, and though he now needs cybernetic organs, he's still the same, cool Wash ... with extra gadgets to please Zoe immensely. ^__^

I concur.

A Space Western should land squarely in the [livejournal.com profile] dklegman media bulls-eye. And I'm exactly the demographic they need to hit. But they didn't, because the marketing for the movie assumed that one watched the TV show; I had not, so the teaser trailer made no goddamn sense, and my buddies and I were wondering aloud if Ice Pirates had gotten a remake.

I liked Blake's 7. I liked Farscape, when it was clever and witty. I liked Outlaw Star, which is the same formula on a sugar high. I should have had a better reaction to Firefly.

Some of the fans didn't exactly help; I really didn't like the attitude of "But Joss Whedon made BUFFY! Why isn't it your favorite show yet?". I didn't particularly like Buffy. :-P

*nods* Yeah, pretty much - like I mentioned, I didn't get the box set until we had friends over in person and they talked me into it. And it didn't help that I think the movie gave into some of his bad writing urges to try to cram it all in.

I never got into Firefly during the initial run on Fox--- mainly because, well, I never knew it existed.

After lots of positive commentary about the Serenity trailer on Making Light, I figured I should at least give the TV series a whirl....

Two runs at a torrent site later, I was hooked...

Am I disappointed that the odds of another movie in the Firefly universe are slim to none?

Not particularly--- I'm just happy that I found the series, and got a movie, and in the end, as far I'm concerned, it made for a wonderful entertainment experience.

(dons asbestos underwear).... besides, if you want REAL rabid fandom, look at Buckeye Nation.

True! But at least we haven't crucified anyone yet, unless you count Lloyd Carr.

''Buff the Vampire Slayer'', eh? There's about that typo that makes the whole thing sound vaguely improper.

Here's a coincidence. I was just looking up the IMDB listing for Serenity last night and saw the same article mentioned. And then saw another where he was apparently getting rehooked on the theme himself and wanted to do some more. Who knows? The proof is in the pudding, or the waiting and seeing what actually happens, I guess.

Frankly, after having gotten the boxset and watching most of it (Julie insists that we wait to watch the last episode tomorrow, argh) I'm mighty disappointed that this one was cut so cruelly short.

In my perfect world, we'd get another season of Firefly which would be capped off with a movie again, and repeat as needed. I also really, really sadface that we never got more than tantalising hints about Book's past. Sigh.

Okay, enough newbie fanboy-ness from me.

I could certainly deal with another season if it went back to what made the show good in the first place, and not just trying to be a huge fangasm.

I guess I need to see the movie again, now that I have so much more context. It still did a really good job explaining things for me, a complete newcomer to the universe.

I am sad that there will be no more Firefly. I really really liked the series and wish it would've gone further. The movie...well, the movie seemed too much like a wrap up/last hurrah. They could have easily taken two episodes' worth of material and made the movie with that, gotten people hooked and made another season. But nooooo. *sigh* I want to know how the story was supposed to go, not how the movie quickly ended it.

I admit - I never watched Firefly on Fox. I think the series is -much- better served by the DvD where you can watch a number of episodes back to back and actually watch the characters evolve without the breaks to allow you to forget stuff.

On the DvD, it's an excellent series - I wish more had been made. But I'm also realistic enough to realize that Serenity, while a good movie, was not a huge blockbuster. And I think Joss knew it too - it's clearly designed to be a 'finale'.

As for prosletyzing... I try to avoid it for this very reason. I will tell someone 'Hey. This is good - look at it when you have time.'. I try very hard not to pressure. Now, if they go 'I've seen it and liked it.'... Well, then I'll geek the hell out. :)

Because I just saw this on [livejournal.com profile] fireflyfans, I had to post it here:

Here: http://whedonesque.com/comments/9027#101124

Joss says:

"All right, now I have to jump in and set the record straight. EW is a fine rag, but they do take things out of context. Obviously when I said I had 'closure', what I meant was "I hate Serenity, I hated Firefly, I think my fans are stupid and Nathan Fillion smells like turnips." But EW's always got to put some weird negative spin on it. But so we're clear once and for all: If you read a quote saying "I'd love to do more in this 'verse with these actors in any medium" all I'm saying is that Nathan has a turnipy odor. It's not his fault, he doesn't eat a lot of them but everyone else in the cast noticed it and tht's not really something I'm prepared to deal with any more. And Jewel said outright she wouldn't do scenes with him except stuff like the SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER funeral scene which was outside in a high SPOILER wind. So if I do manage to find another incarnation for my beloved creation, it will have been totally against my will.

I hope that clears everything up. Oh, and when I say I want to do a Spike movie, it means I have a bunion on my toe.

-joss (by which I mean Tim)

I just watched the show for the first time a couple months ago. It caught my attention more than Buffy or Angel, even, probably because of my rabid Trekkie nature which leads me to believe Space = Good.

What I am taking out of this is that I am important enough to make random Firefly fans attempt to sway my thought process, and that both amuses and disturbs me.

lol Sorry, I should have said, I saw you on [livejournal.com profile] faetan's friend's list. Yeah, it's (I'm) all strange. Sorry. :)

Money seems to be against it going any further, I don't think their box office gross even came near the production costs. But it's fun to dream.
