ATTN: Rabid Browncoats,
Where is your God now?
Actually, I do feel sad about this myself, but it's happened and done. And like a fair amount of casual fans I talk to, the rather stalkery behavior of a good chunk of the fanbase as the movie ran put me off of it for awhile, and I suspect did more harm than good.

I liked Blake's 7. I liked Farscape, when it was clever and witty. I liked Outlaw Star, which is the same formula on a sugar high. I should have had a better reaction to Firefly.
Some of the fans didn't exactly help; I really didn't like the attitude of "But Joss Whedon made BUFFY! Why isn't it your favorite show yet?". I didn't particularly like Buffy. :-P

Date: 2005-12-21 02:16 am (UTC)After lots of positive commentary about the Serenity trailer on Making Light, I figured I should at least give the TV series a whirl....
Two runs at a torrent site later, I was hooked...
Am I disappointed that the odds of another movie in the Firefly universe are slim to none?
Not particularly--- I'm just happy that I found the series, and got a movie, and in the end, as far I'm concerned, it made for a wonderful entertainment experience.
(dons asbestos underwear).... besides, if you want REAL rabid fandom, look at Buckeye Nation.

Date: 2005-12-21 11:07 am (UTC)Frankly, after having gotten the boxset and watching most of it (Julie insists that we wait to watch the last episode tomorrow, argh) I'm mighty disappointed that this one was cut so cruelly short.
In my perfect world, we'd get another season of Firefly which would be capped off with a movie again, and repeat as needed. I also really, really sadface that we never got more than tantalising hints about Book's past. Sigh.
Okay, enough newbie fanboy-ness from me.

Date: 2005-12-21 04:39 pm (UTC)On the DvD, it's an excellent series - I wish more had been made. But I'm also realistic enough to realize that Serenity, while a good movie, was not a huge blockbuster. And I think Joss knew it too - it's clearly designed to be a 'finale'.
As for prosletyzing... I try to avoid it for this very reason. I will tell someone 'Hey. This is good - look at it when you have time.'. I try very hard not to pressure. Now, if they go 'I've seen it and liked it.'... Well, then I'll geek the hell out. :)

Joss says:
"All right, now I have to jump in and set the record straight. EW is a fine rag, but they do take things out of context. Obviously when I said I had 'closure', what I meant was "I hate Serenity, I hated Firefly, I think my fans are stupid and Nathan Fillion smells like turnips." But EW's always got to put some weird negative spin on it. But so we're clear once and for all: If you read a quote saying "I'd love to do more in this 'verse with these actors in any medium" all I'm saying is that Nathan has a turnipy odor. It's not his fault, he doesn't eat a lot of them but everyone else in the cast noticed it and tht's not really something I'm prepared to deal with any more. And Jewel said outright she wouldn't do scenes with him except stuff like the SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER funeral scene which was outside in a high SPOILER wind. So if I do manage to find another incarnation for my beloved creation, it will have been totally against my will.
I hope that clears everything up. Oh, and when I say I want to do a Spike movie, it means I have a bunion on my toe.

I just watched the show for the first time a couple months ago. It caught my attention more than Buffy or Angel, even, probably because of my rabid Trekkie nature which leads me to believe Space = Good.

Date: 2005-12-22 06:13 am (UTC)Money seems to be against it going any further, I don't think their box office gross even came near the production costs. But it's fun to dream.
