Is it bad that while I'm totally moral to my own code and beliefs, I'm finding that I'm amoral, at best, by a lot of "normal" standards?

From what I know of you (admittedly, I mostly know you through occasional contact in Andrews, time spent in Taylor, and LJ), you're high up there in the ethics and morals department (well, there's the perversion thing, but if I called you on that, we'd all be evil :P). Definitely moreso than a lot of other people I can think of.

So no, it's not bad. Feel comfortable with your code! Don't forget, we're the ones who shape the ethics and morals of the future--morals and ethics ain't absolute.

I guess it's like this. I know that I'm not a bad person, but I'm realizing that I'd be willing to do 'bad things' for certain reasons.

I know, I know. I worry too much.

Mmm

While I fully agree that we should make our own morals, and most definitely have my own crazy standards, I'll cite something someone told me once when I mentioned a similar vein to this that caused me to laugh twistedly. :>

"Serial Killers just operate under different morals."

That ought to frighten you right up?

I think it's more a matter that you're not too afraid to think for yourself and have taken the time to be self-critical of your values and beliefs.

Nothing wrong with that, per se.

True.

But, it takes you aback for a moment when you first look at it.

Trust me, I understand. It's that moment of realizing that most of reality is different than what you thought it was.

And half the time it's that realization that reality is worse than you gave it credit for.

Not to mention the "Am I really that much of a freak?" ;)

Not to mention "Why didn't I realize this before?"

Ayah. Sort of like when I learned that one of my better friends had bought a gun at school in high school; or just the random things that I apparently kept turning my head just on cue to miss it.

In my case, I had a blissfully ignorant perspective on the world up until about '97 or so. Eh well.

It's not about cynicism so much as trying to keep reaching for the ideals, I guess.

I was never so much too idealistic, yet....

I dunno. I guess I never quite realized how things didn't mesh right.

Ahh, well, I guess I'm the idealistic one then.

As a mutual friend once said (paraphrased), "Saying what something 'should be' doesn't mean much in this world."

Feh.
