I was just talking about this to my manager last week. To me, it's pretty amazing that a lot of people don't remember that - it seems so regional. I've asked people from other states in my age range and they don't remember (of course we were in 6th grade at the time), but the people who seem to have a memory of it are those who were on the Space Coast. Mayhaps it's the whole thing like 9/11 - it's etched in your memories when you are there and see it with your own eyes versus television.
I was a space nut pretty much from birth, so I'm a bit biased. But we did watch it happen in my school (and the subsequent launch of Discovery a few years later for different reasons) because of the whole "teacher in space" thing.
They had planned a big school assembly + some presenters from the local science & technology museum talking about what was going on. Instead, my mom came and got me from school (along with a lot of other parents getting their kids.)
