Olympic note:

The only thing slightly more awesome than the lighting of the torch itself was having a F1 Ferarri do olympic ring donuts in the middle of the stage.

Olympic note 2:

Gender studies people should review the tape of the opening ceremony carefully. The increased role of women in the pagentry compared to prior years is probably a paper or two worth of material.

Warning: Do not watch the opening ceremony after playing Ratchet and Clank for several hours. I swear, it looked just like a level, possibly the arena, with the ice skaters definitely one of the mid-level enemies.

I'm still trying to understand why the "Guides" escorting each group of athletes had GI Joe scale skiers flying out of their backsides.

See, now I was more paying attention to how the Italians looked like a parade of baked potatoes in their shiny jackets.
Or how for some reason they decided that Disco Inferno and YMCA and other 70s and 80s songs were good to play at the Olympics opening ceremonies.
Along with a featured Lenin song praising the wonders of communism.

I thought the italian uniforms were better than some of them - particularly the countries who looked like they bought their gear off the rack at a truck stop, right down to the trucker hats. :D

Besides, disco inferno is totally appropriate for skiing. Oh, yes.

The Ferarri sure was goofy. Were the donuts in the shape of Olympic rings, though? Really? That makes a bit more sense.

After watching it go around, we're at least 70% sure they were - just hard to tell under the tire smoke, and then the cameras cut away too fast.

From what I saw, they tried but didn't quite succeed in making the Olympic rings. You could see the skid marks in a couple of the panned shots while Pavoratti was singing.

Ahhh. I ended up going to bed not long after the torch was lit.
