Jul. 3rd, 2006 10:17 amIt occurs to me that I haven't posted a 40k battle report in awhile, and
dklegman and I had a pretty darn fun one yesterday at Todd's, so...
This was a 1500 point Cleanse mission on a 4' x 6' table, with a fair amount of rolling hill terrain set up by a neutral third party (ie: the slackers who hadn't gotten their stuff ready to play with, and Alex, who was ready but didn't have a dance partner. :D)
Dave started from the NW table edge while I started on the SE.
The Forces:
Cadre B'lanced Br'kf's
Shas'o K'llog

Versus:
Detachment Latinate! (yaaaay)
Epistolary Ceasar
-Libraian w/ Fear, Fury, Terminator Armor, Storm Bolter, Force Weapon
-Librarium Command Squad w/ 2 Assault cannons, plus Sargeant w/ Combi-plas and power sword (Furious Charge)
Mounted in:
Land Raider Extremis
(Land Raider Crusader w/ Smoke Launchers, Hunter Killer missile)
Terminator Squad Cassius (Tank Hunters)
-1 Assault Cannon, 1 Cyclone Launcher, Sargeant w/ SB & PW, Drop Pod.
Tactical Squad Livia
-7 man squad w/ Plasma Cannon, Meltagun, Sargeant w/ PW & Plasma Pistol, Mounted in Pod
Tactical Squad Mithridates
-7 man squad w/ Missile Launcher, Plasmagun, Sargeant w/ Bolt Pistol & PW
Dreadnaught Cresca
-Assault Cannon, CCW w/ SB, Drop Pod, Smoke Launchers
Turn 1
I won the roll for first turn, so after placement I moved the Land Raider forward into some of the near hills to get him out of the immediate line of fire from Dave's railheads, and decided to try a shot with the hunter killer missile on the one railhead that still had LOS.
On a glancing hit, I managed to disable the smart missile system, and that was it for my shooting.
Dave's turn began with a flurry of movement, with Team Boo Berry taking up a defensive stand on the largest hill on the NW corner, pretty much locking that corner down for the remainder of the game. His railheads moved forward to get a bead on the LRC, as did his HQ crisis team, while the 2nd Crisis team, devilfish, Vespid, and stealths moved for the table center.
On firing, one hammerhead shot wide, but the other scored on the LRC. I popped the smoke launchers and turned the penetrating hit to a glance, but the crew was still shaken. Assault moves prepared Dave for the likely drop pod landings, and also put several of his units in a straight line...
Turn 2
I rolled for reserves, and 2 of the four drop pods would be coming in. Squads Livia and Cassius took the fight to the enemy, with Livia landing on target directly in from of Dave's tank formation, while Cassius deviated slightly but still came in off the flank of his already damaged Hammerhead. Meanwhile, the machine spirit of the land raider moved it forwards towards Dave's firing line, and Caesar decided he'd prefer to walk, exiting the land raider with his squad from the front hatch.
Calling on the Fury of the Aincients, Ceasar seared the minds of several fire warriors, one of the Stealth Team members, and 2 vespid, and managed to annoy most of the crisis suits. Squad Livia managed to whiff entirely with their shots at the fresh hammerhead, including their plasma cannon blowing himself off the face of the map, but squad Cassius did manage to disable the already wounded Hammerhead's rail gun. The storm bolters of the drop pods spun up to attempt to make a dent in the stealth team, but they were more useful at divoting the ground.
Dave began to cackle at this point.
In a frenzy of burst cannon and plasma fire, as the Peanut Butter Firing Line dismounted to join the Crisis Suit fire, squad Livia was eliminated to a man, with the surviving Vespid putting in the coup de grace on their Sargeant. Another railgun shot hit the Land Raider, but only stunned the crew once again, leaving me feeling remarkably lucky, and several shots from team Boo Berry sprayed Squad Cassius, leaving them injured but alive (1 wound on 3 of the models). Finally, the weaponless Hammerhead decided to attempt a ramming attack on Squad Cassius, but its Tank Shock was defeated by the cyclone carrying Terminator, who stood his ground and fired on the tank with exactly 0 good sense, managing to knock it from the air and furrowing it into the ground at his feet. (Immobilized result with less than 6" move). After some maneuvering to avoid countercharges, Dave's turn ended.
Turn 3
Squad Mithridates arrived this turn, landing to support Caesar with their fire on the ridgeline his Terminators were cresting. The Land Raider's machine spirit drove it slowly around the side of one of the hill formations to prepare for firing on the Tau battle group, while Cassius moved forward to attack the Tau stealth team.
Several of the shield drones protecting the Tau forces were destroyed this turn, but the most notable event was another successful use of the Fury, which melted the Vespid brains into butter.
Reacting to his crippled Tank, Dave attempted to reduce Cassius with heavy fire, leading to the death of one of the Terminators, followed by a Stealth Team assault. Cassius slayed one suit with his power sword, another Terminator was lost to the Stealth team's sneaky prowess, but the Power Fist of the assault cannon armed Terminator proved mightier than another of the stealth squad could withstand.
Turn 4
Dreadnaught Cresca arrived, landing just past Team BooBerry's position, opening fire with his assault cannon and destroying their drone support. The assault cannons of squad Cesar destroyed the HQ bodyguards, while Ceasar himself managed to wound the Shas'o with his fire. The hurricane bolters of the Land Raider Crusader also awoke from their slumber, but missed wide, while the multi-melta managed to shake the Devilfish protecting the PBFL.
In assault, Another member of Squad Cassius fell, leaving only Cassius and his assault cannoneer, but all but one of the Stealth Troopers had been slain, who then fled from the board.
As the railhead and crisis suits maneuvered, several shots deflected from Dreadnaught Cresca, who stolidly stayed in position. Meanwhile, the PBFL fired on Squad Ceasar, wounding several, and Crisis fire eliminated 2 of the members of squad Mithridates. The Shas'o joined the other Crisis squad, and moved towards a confrontation with Caesar.
Turn 5
Sporadic fire from Mithridates attempted to damage the Shas'o, but only succeeded in getting their Plasmagunner killed. However, squad Caesar was able to disable the smart missiles on the still operative railhead, and Cresca eliminated all but 3 of Team Boo Berry with devastating fire.
However, the true hero of this turn was to be the Land Raider, who managed to penetrate and catastrophically annihilate the Devilfish, and with it, much of the PBFL, with Squad Cassius eliminating the few survivors.
However, Cassius triumph was short lived - return fire from the Crisis Suits claimed the squad, and shots from the remaining Boo Berry troops elminated another of squad Caesar. The battle of attrition seemed to be set.
Turn 6
Fire from Squad Mithridates and the Land Raider combined to elimiate a crisis suit, while Cresca destroyed the last of team Boo Berry. However, Caesar's attempts to fire upon the Shas'o failed, with the assault cannon shots repelled like water by his remarkable armor.
A final shot from the last operational Hammerhead did not penetrate Cresca's blessed armor, but the parting shots from the Shas'o did claim one of the 2 assault cannons from squad Caesar before the Tau army moved enough reinforcements into the area to force a withdrawl.
Final Results:
The Land Raider had helped me claim the SE corner, while squad Caesar was too wounded to claim the SW. Dave's Hammerhead and crisis suits held the NW corner securely, but Cresca had the NE corner secured. A 2 to 1 victory on table quarters.
Points wise, it was a Major Victory (1000 VP for the marines, 675 for the Tau), but the battle could have easily gone either way, and we had a lot of fun playing it out.
I'm really looking forward to getting to face Todd and Bradshaw when they get back from vacation, or even better, to get a crack at John's reinforced Eldar or Guard.
It's going to be a good summer for killing little plastic men. :D
...meanwhile, please, someone, pull the fire alarm here? I know I'm getting out at 4, but -still-...

Date: 2006-07-03 05:55 pm (UTC)My big accomplishment this game was finally figuring how to not make the Assault phase suck so horribly for my army. I managed to keep nasty Terminators out of assault range for just about the whole game, and I only started Assault combat to ball-and-chain enemy units where they were while I tried to rally the more mobile parts of my army.

Date: 2006-07-03 06:06 pm (UTC)As for me, I need better anti-armor, I've learned. The plasma is good for taking on lightly armored things like Rhinos or Chimeras, but meltas seem like better assault weapons than plasmas, since they don't get hot, and replacing the tactical's heavy weapon with a Lascannon would also make a big difference.
