MWAHAHAH.

I found the other Mechwarrior 4 CD.

Mercenaries is still AWOL, but at worst, I might eBay for it after the move.

MWAHAHA.

*stomp-stomp-BOOM!*

I dunno - the overall bugginess level seemed to get worse as the series moved foward. Especially when it came to the autocannons.

I was incredibly happy when MW3 came out, despite the lance command system being the most asstacular piece of shit I've ever seen.

Mechwarrior 2 is basically exempt from my rants about archaeo-bugginess in video games, chiefly because I later played Privateer 2: The Darkening, and found out what a really buggy game is like. ;)

I never used autocannons much. I always liked loading up on LRMs, ER PPCs and Gauss Rifles, a fact which will surprise [livejournal.com profile] bzarcher not at all.

(I didn't make many mechs below 50 tons.)

I thought MW3 did some neat stuff (like lasers as sizzling beam weapons), and it was a whole lot prettier, but I never got into it as I did Mechwarrior 2.

I liked the stark look, the whatever-you-please controls, the heapin' helpin' of mechs (especially once GBL added in a lot of nifty chassis), and the story sold the Warden/Crusader rivalry pretty well. Mechwarrior 2 basically is my mental picture of what Battletech should be.

And the Ghost Bear's Legacy intro is the greatest giant robot game cutscene ever.

Heh. My ideal Victor would swap the right arm down to an AC/10 for better range, the SRM pack for an LRM, and added a large laser. Actually it'd move the mediums to the torso, and put the large in the left arm. Probbably had to tweak the heat sinks a bit, since it would run hotter than the stock model. Assuming I didn't just use the 3050 or whatever version with the gauss rifle of course.

I admit GBL was, overall, probbably the best of the ones Activision made. Combine that level of story and control editing, with the higher engine realism of MW3 ... it'd be just about perfect.

Privateer II is the -only- game I've had to take back because it was too buggy to play. Quite disheartening for an unapologetic wing commander fan boy. Darkstar One looks like it's a worthy sucessor however - just make sure your video card is at least a GeForce 6 or equivlaent. (Fancy graphics effects should NEVER be used for the goddamn HUD. And that goes double when it's the bloody fucking 'you were hit from this bearing' indicator! But that's my only complaint so far.)

...so you basically want to have an Orion with 10 tons more armor?

I'd say that if you looked for a copy of MW4: Mercenaries, you'd enjoy it.

Jump Jets! Must have Jump Jets! Orion does not have jump jets!

(That and the orion just looks too damn fugly.)

Fine, fine. WITH jump jets.

The 'too damn fugly' problem is why I strongly favor the more purposefully-built Clan Mechs. ;-)

Also, welcome to the [livejournal.com profile] dklegman flist.

I'm not sure that going Clanner helps the "fugly" issue. Especially since about 3/4 of their mechs have a case of intense Chickin' legs. (Buck-aw!)

Timber Wolf is the only one the chicken legs really worked for. Mostly because it achieves the same level of bad-ass as the Apocalypse-class HERC. (A macine which in no way needed the "mostly obliterate any target in one shot" minchkin cannons, if you had even a vauge idea what you were doing.)

Ultra and rotary type ACs seem up your alley, though.

And, yeah, GBL's intro was just plain awesome.
