The MG Char's Z'gok and MG Gouf Custom I ordered from HLJ's clearance sale arrived!
I took one look at the Gouf Custom box and realized that I needed to start a little slower, so I've been working on the Z'gok since we cleaned up from dinner.
For the most part, I'm very pleased with my progress! Three hours, and I have the upper torso/head, propulsion tanks, and arms completed! And the intake louvers on the chest are a pain in the ass, by the way.
For thsi guy, I'm planning on assembly + decals, nothing too fancy.
Because of all the injection points on the Gouf sprues, I'm probably going to be doing some sanding and painting in addition to assembly and decals, which is why he's going second. (Plus, all those tiny power cable rings. Oye! I'm so glad it looks like they found a better way to do those on the new Zaku 2.0 model. Which is something else I may get in the future...)
All in all, though, I forgot how fun it was to build these!
I also got an odd slip of paper in the Z'gok box, covered on both sides with Japanese and a telephone number. It's not a warning label, I don't think, and it's not related to the instructions, but I can't read it well enough to figure out what it is. I may scan it to flickr and see if anyone can figure it out later.

Date: 2007-06-12 11:20 am (UTC)Some ways, it's very pretty. No surprise, it's an Apple product. But the way it handles bookmarks isn't thrilling me, and it has a tendency to lock up and choke if I try to open a lot of tabs at once. (Like, say, my daily comic trawl.)
We'll see - certainly I'm not giving up on it yet.

Date: 2007-06-12 03:28 am (UTC)Much as I'd love to make one of those MGs, I don't think I could. I have no problems with the regular ones or Zoids, but when there are lots of tiny parts that need panting and sanding? Not for me.

Date: 2007-06-12 03:41 am (UTC)The ones that mainly drive me nuts are the Zeon mobile suits with the power cables covered in armored rings. (Zakus and Goufs, mostly.) They make each ring an individual part that you slip over a "cable" which looks great, but keeping track of all the rings can be daunting.
If you wanted to try a MG model for the first time, the first thing I'd suggest is unless you have a particular favorite, start with one of the lower priced ones, and preferrably a simpler design.
I'm not saying go out and get the Mobile Ball kit (Mobile Balls are boring! Cheap, I admit, and probably the cheapest MG at regular prices, but boring!), but something like a GM Sniper, Rick Dom (expensive, but meaty shapes and not too fiddly), GM Kai or one of the simpler gundam designs are definently cool. (Of course, this is also a good example of do as I say, not as I do. My first MG was a ZZ Gundam I traded a guy for. I don't reccomend that one...it was, at the time, the most complex and unstable MG kit released! :D)
