bzarcher: A Sylveon from Pokemon floating in the air, wearing a pair of wingtip glasses (EVE)

So, back on Saturday, [livejournal.com profile] alathaniel and I got jumped in EVE by a group of pirates. (Not NPC rats, pirates.)

I got robbed to the tune of 25 million ISK and I was pretty pissed off for a lot of the weekend.

Fast-forward to today when one of my higher-ups in the corp asked me to do some research on the corp who took us down. I knew they were a dedicated pirate/merc corp, but after reading that they have a minimum skill requirement of 20,000,000 skill points for new recruits, I really don't feel quite so bad.

(For some explanation for the non-EVE crowd, I've been training and skilling with "sincere intent" to get myself into a battleship, and pretty much running my skills up one way or another since the first day I started playing, about 4 months ago. I'm considered pretty darn good for where I am and what my stats are, and I've only got 3,000,000 skill points. That fight really was a midget trying to fight against the '76 Celtics.)

Now that I've had a chance to calm down a bit and do rational post-mortem? I'm now somewhat impressed by how they pulled off jumping us with that little warning. That conclusion, followed by your reporting their in-game requirements for membership, eased much of the sting.

It's also prompted looking into recon/ship probing and counters thereto. The massive whining about how the current probe system makes it impossible to find mission runners is highly amusing in a twisted sort of way.

Realisticly speaking? Right now, unless the full crew goes in locked and loaded for PvP, the only real option is to run and cut your losses. The ship probing guides I have found are ... almost deliberately vague on the subject of reliably penetrating a mission deadspace with recon probes, which makes formulation of active countermeasures difficult at best.

Oh, yeah. We got rolled by -pros-, no doubt. They pulled an excellent operation, and unfortunately we were the suckers.

Something tells me those guides are quite deliberately vague, since I have a feeling I know who the best scanners tend to work for.

Yep. Wouldn't do to let the poor saps who think they're safe figure out a reliable countermeasure other than "run if you can" now would it?

Well, your course is clear, isn't it.

Either someone is a mind reader, or else I'm being painfully obvious here.

To be fair, [livejournal.com profile] degraine is a smart and cunning one. As an Aussie, he's bred to survive in the harshest of MMORPGs.

Then in that case, I believe the userpic speaks for itself.

I've heard some very interesting things about EVE's psychological aspects. Although the stories about CCCP employees abusing admin privs and thieving bastards stealing the assets of entire corps is sad.

They've never stolen a corp's assets as far as I know, but yeah, I keep an eye out after the incident with the GM passing BoB blueprints and gear. OTOH, supposedly they're policing that now.
