Nov. 5th, 2007 10:30 pmWhee! Post flight hangovers are fun. I'm really glad I took today off of work. I'd have been a mess, especially since while my plane arrived at 9:30, all the checked bags from my plane didn't get to baggage claim until almost 10:30. (Thank you, Baggage Handlers Local 204 - They Lose Your Shit.)
However, I did catch some of the current rabblerousing in the hockey world today.
On Saturday, the Islanders brought back pretty-goddamned-legendary coach Al Arbour, so that he could coach his 1,500th game. They signed him to a 1-day contract, and he paid them back by chalking up a win. (His 740th, in fact, so Al got two personal milestones, and set some Islanders records.)
I thought that was pretty damned classy, but apparently a writer for New York Newsday, Jim Baumbach, has been arguing that this was "mere showboating" and shouldn't count.
This is, in fact, horseshit, and far better writers and people than I have been giving Mr. Baumbach a crash course in class and dignity. (Of course, this is also a NY newspaper columnist. Class and Dignity may well be far too alien for him to understand.)
However, I really enjoyed a quote from this response:
And sometimes, the game gives an opportunity to honor those who gave themselves up to it in the past, and we all get to share in the warmth of doing the right thing.

Hockey has been more in touch with it's past than them all. Perhaps it's the distant 3rd or even 4th sport in this country, but this tough game lives and breathes itself, at times.

Date: 2007-11-06 05:21 am (UTC)But yeah, it's pretty damn spiffy they asked him to come out of retirement for one night. And it was one hell of a hockey game too. Three goals in three minuites is spectacular, even when it's scored against the team you're cheering for.
