Why Motorola is dying.

Jeeeeeeesus, that's depressing. The last part about "we back our country on our ability to invent the future" really hit home.

In somewhat happier news (and why I'm probably Part Of The Problem): whoa Snake Eyes holy shit.

A friend of mine's company went down that way. The CEO spent the money needed for the new roof to put himself into an exclusive country club because he "needed to live a CEO lifestyle". The head of an electronics firm who won't use a computer is really absurd.

Where was the board during all this? Oh, I know they were at the 19th hole sipping mai tais and wondering what new Mercedes to buy.

"Don't bother me with what's going wrong right now, I'm working a buisness deal that will help the company's future. No, I'm not intending to move on before someone notices the shit I just took on the aforementioned future."

Sound about right?

It happens in academia too. The stories I'll be able to tell one day.

I give you about 80% of the ECE department profs where I went to grad school. Who would fund their PhD student's research with TA assignments in lieu of grant money. Lest they have to do something other than Matlab-based DSP or FPGA-based chip design wankery that will never be implemented outside their lab because the hardware needs to have it operate in realtime are impractically high.

"make me a phone that looks, feels, and works like a symbol of wealth and privilege"

Funny...when I saw the Razr, I thought "What a flimsy piece of trash." And sure enough.. most the people I knew who had one broke it in normal operation.
