Man, I used to think Ben Stein was kinda cool, Nixonian backer notwithstanding.

So much for that.

I keep trying to tell myself that this is actually a very long, protracted joke he's pulling on everyone. I mean, there's no way he can be serious, is there?

I was holding out hope for that, but he's either playing the deepest Deep Game I ever saw, or he's serious.

I'm with you.

I used to think the man was cool and sharp, but now?

What in the helling hell...I just don't know. But my affection and respect have come back to me, with bloody noses and blacked eyes.

If only he'd just stuck to game shows.

I wonder if he'll keep appearing in ads for stuff like Clear Eyes.

Cause, y'know, he's selling SCIENCE!

Nothing says profits like zealous fundies with cash. Maybe he's hoping to finance Win More Of Ben Stein's Money.

The April 9 episode of the Scientific American Podcast goes into great detail about how appalling that movie is.

The only good thing I can say is that they were helpful in letting SciAm see the film early, and discussed it with them. I didn't have the nerve to listen to the lengthy interview with the producers.

Well, you know, if it wasn't for the fact that in all reality, he has a point. How much technology was originally developed for a military purpose. A lot.

Sure, but how does Charles Darwin exploring Evolution or biologists studying changing ecosystems lead to the Nazi Holocaust?

I didn't say ALL technology. But there is a whole lot that's developed for the purpose of finding newer, safer, more exciting ways of killing people far, far away or to stop ourselves from being killed by people far, far away. I'm not saying that it's a good stand to take, but it is one that you can follow the line of logic. And I do mean logic, not lunacy. It just requires you to be angry or upset about it in some manner.

*nods* But in the arguements he uses in the movie, all technology is bad. Not just tech developed for the military, just as he says that scientists are bad because they want to advance their own agendas.

You're making reasonable points, and he's making straw men arguements. I think that's a problem with the way he presents things.

To be honest until you posted about it, I had never even heard of the movie.
