bzarcher: A Sylveon from Pokemon floating in the air, wearing a pair of wingtip glasses (teh_indy's Lebowski #15)

Working on stuff at my desk, and someone comes into our area (which we really ask you not do) and hovers right behind me with someone while I'm trying to work on the phone until I get off the call and turn around.

"Yes?"

"Yes. Um. This is $NAME, she's a temporary in my department, and she locked out her account this morning and can't get into her computer."

Which, y'know, you're supposed to CALL US or PUT IN A TICKET FOR, and y'know, perhaps be at the computer?

"Oh-kay. I just unlocked the account, but I need her to actually be at the computer to sign into it. If it doesn't work, please -call us from the computer-, so we can work on it together."

"Ohhh...yeah, right. Sorry."

In a perfect world, my office is surrounded by fire, spikes, and a moat of alligators who only love and trust me, their master. Hell on the cleaning staff, but you can't beat the privacy.

Heh. The chem IT department here feels that way too, but the problem is that they ignore emails, web-submitted work orders, and phone calls. For weeks. I now give them three days, tops, to reply to me by email, and then I haunt them and endure the evil death-glares of doom.

They hate me, but the feeling is mutual.

See, I don't play the "you can't reach me" game. I hate people that do that, too.

If you call me, unless I can't answer the phone due to working on something else, I answer. You email me, I respond, and if I get a ticket, I work it as quickly as I can.

Then you totally wouldn't hate me either. :)

To be fair, the mutual hatred here has developed before all this, when it became abundantly clear that they were not interested in maintaining the accuracy of instructions on how to do things on the website but also not interested in answering questions about why things didn't work. Also, they have yet to give me an answer that was even 60% true about anything when I stopped by. Agghhh, hate.

Anyway, responsible, together people should never be hovered over. Ours should be kicked in the shins every few months. And then hovered over.

That's true - I totally don't hate you in general. :D

It sounds like, in general, your IT staff could use some bloodletting. Perhaps a murderization or two to get everyone else back on their toes.

I'm in the mood for that today, after sleeping poorly, and I do have to go talk to them today after they decided, once again, that I am not important enough to respond to. (The perpetual problem of being a grad student: your advisor will delegate all tasks of contacting people to you, but people who are contacted will only respond to your advisor.)
